Oct. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Credit markets have fallen so far that they are providing a "once in a lifetime opportunity,'' and investors are still selling. Prices of loans rated below investment grade declined to a record low 66.1 cents on the dollar, virtually guaranteeing investors get their money back, based on historical recovery rates, according to data compiled by Standard & Poor's. Yields on corporate bonds show investors expect 5.6 percent of the market to go bust, the highest default rate since the Great Depression, according to Christopher Garman, chief executive officer of debt research firm Garman Research LLC in Orinda, California. R.I.P free market (laissez-faire) Capitalism posted by dev/null, 2008-09-08 02:10:47
Some stories do not require pages of elaboration; the event speaks clearer and louder than any journo could hope to ‘pen.’ Today the U.S. government was forced to bail out the ‘competitive, individual, free market, laissez-faire,’ CAPITALIST SYSTEM, which until now was considered second only to God! The USA and its ideological backbone is broken, as has been so painfully demonstrated by one of the largest scale government financial interventions in history – well done Milton Friedman! Quiet, please! posted by Ursula Sautter and Mary Pinkowish via quill, 2008-07-15 10:44:29
A leaf blower, snow blower, lawn mower and two huge dogs—Peter D’Epiro can describe in excruciating detail how his neighbour’s lawn equipment and pets ruined summer afternoons and dinner parties for him and his wife for more than a decade in Ridgewood, New Jersey. But he’d rather not. “I can barely think about that situation without rushing for the Valium or the IV gin drip,” he says. (full story)

The Real Enemy posted by evo, 2008-05-20 09:17:43
The world today is awash with misinformation, disinformation, disinfected news stories, simplistic solutions, outrageous propaganda and the illusion that warring/opposing forces are distinct. Bush, his neo-cons, Bin laden, Al-Qaeda, Christian, Jewish and Muslim fundamentalists ALL have one thing in common -- they are all CONSERVATIVE! (full story and 2 comments)

Nature signals calamity! posted by Mollie Matteson via rialator, 2008-04-28 20:57:24
[First the honey bees now the bats -- is anyone listening to the most important alarms? Ed.]

BATS have been dying by the thousands recently in the Northeastern United States. No one knows why, and it may be months, perhaps years, before the cause is determined. Meanwhile, scientists predict that this summer there will be a population explosion of insects, which bats normally eat in large quantities. Greater numbers of beetles and moths could mean severe and costly losses for farmers and timber producers. There could also be bigger swarms of mosquitoes and other biting bugs, which will mean more discomfort for all of us. (full story)

10 days That Changed Capitalism posted by Rob Johnson and Robert Borosage via reed, 2008-03-29 08:35:20
The world has changed. The market fundamentalism that has dominated our economics over last three decades has been unmasked as a sham, deemed useless by the guardian of the integrity of finance itself, the Federal Reserve. (full story)

Digital underbelly of the World posted by Kismo, 2008-03-09 10:15:09
The crews laugh at times at the lack of expertise displayed by western government agencies in the area of IT security. The Internet belongs to those with the greatest level of skill and there is no shortage of it ‘out there’ – crews, teams and individuals -- but sadly very little real talent ‘in there,’ moronic government agencies and corporations. No real hacker could tolerate an office/fixed environment for more then a day or so! It is the nature of the beast and the environment in which it lives. (full story)

Seed vault Frankenstein's Farm posted by F. William Engdahl via reed, 2007-12-03 20:41:39
One thing Microsoft founder Bill Gates can’t be accused of is sloth. He was already programming at 14, founded Microsoft at age 20 while still a student at Harvard. By 1995 he had been listed by Forbes as the world’s richest man from being the largest shareholder in his Microsoft, a company which his relentless drive built into a de facto monopoly in software systems for personal computers. Hacks and ‘bots’ – very old news posted by Kismo, 2007-11-29 14:09:15
The FBI and other mental leper agencies have finally become aware of a very old hacking method (15 years would be close) of harnessing and mining info from private computers – good work dimwits, in relative terms 15 years in IT equals about 75 years in other industries! Kiddie hackers have been accruing ‘bots’ (short for robot) slave machines (zombies) for years, usually for childish pursuits like attacking each other’s systems (DDoS attacks) hacker wars, as they are known. Our servers were subjected to one of these mindless attacks 15 years ago – easily circumvented with professional expertise, which ‘intelligence’ and ‘security’ agencies lack, I might add!
