BANKSY -- elephant-2 Aspects of Asymmetric Post-Modern Warfare posted by dingo, 2006-08-27 10:40:45
Victory over any opponent is the result of functionally superior values and strategies not advanced technologies as is often imagined; wars today continue to be fought by men and women. The relative strengths and weakness of combatants and cultures determine outcomes in today’s conflicts. The recent conflict in Lebanon demonstrates that military might is no match for superior strategy and tactics – superior technology is the intoxicant of technocrats and the drug of weak and incapable fighters/soldiers. UZA Lebanon, Lies and Criminal Warfare posted by Kwang zi, 2006-08-24 06:24:52
“Israel has a right to defend itself” was the inane excuse offered to the world by the Bush administration for the murder and vandalism committed by Israel in Lebanon – what price ‘defensive warfare’ in today’s world? The unprecedented vandalism and indiscriminate slaughter in Lebanon was (we are expected to believe) the measured response to a border incursion and two kidnapped soldiers! Hundreds of dead children, wanton destruction and the criminal oil pollution of the Mediterranean coast are the results of Israel ‘defending’ itself? (full story and 4 comments)

The Myth of the Omnipresent Enemy posted by John Mueller, 2006-08-23 06:25:20
Despite all the ominous warnings of wily terrorists and imminent attacks, there has been neither a successful strike nor a close call in the United States since 9/11. The reasonable -- but rarely heard -- explanation is that there are no terrorists within the United States, and few have the means or the inclination to strike from abroad.

John Mueller is Professor of Political Science at Ohio State University and the author of "The Remnants of War." He is currently writing a book about reactions to terrorism and other perceived international threats that will be published early next year. (full story)

Carla Del Ponte Tea Party at the Hague posted by budgie, 2006-08-21 04:22:36
Is the Hague court a joke or have we just lost our sense of perspective? The latest indiscriminate slaughter of children and innocent civilians in Lebanon by ‘God’s chosen’ seems not to warrant the attention of the Hague court. Carla Del Ponte’s latest remonstration against the Serbian leadership for not delivering war criminals to her court seems ‘slightly’ dissociative in view of recent events. Her obsession with Serbs now borders on the pathological. Would the civilian death toll in Iraq warrant her attention? Iraq now approaches one hundred thousand innocent civilian deaths – eighty percent directly attributable to the forces of occupation! (full story and 1 comments)

Kofi Annan Ceasefire Violated: The Nature of the Beast posted by gan, 2006-08-19 14:22:25
Most people are familiar with the popular tales of the half-dead venomous snake that bit the man who saved its life and the scorpion that stung the frog that ferried it (on its back) away from floodwaters that threatened to drown it. Both stories share a similar moral; the beast remains true to its nature regardless of noble, humanitarian, mitigating factors – serpents will always strike and scorpions will always sting, regardless! The Losers War: Lebanon posted by finch, 2006-08-17 16:13:56
FAILURE is emblazoned on the foreheads of all those involved; the VICTORY of the day is for PEACE and there is nothing any power, state, or group could do to prevent the (future) peaceful intentions of the people. Human civilisation and the blood of innocents demand it! (full story and 1 comments)

Lt. Ehren Watada Lt. Ehren Watada's speech at Veterans for Peace National Convention posted by Dahr Jamail, 2006-08-14 19:36:55
On Saturday night, I was lucky enough to be at the Veterans for Peace National Convention. For that night, Lt. Ehren Watada was able to give the following speech, which I've just received permission to post here. The speech was met with a powerful, standing ovation from the vets who've been there.

Lt. Ehren Watada, for those who don't already know, became the first commissioned officer to publicly refuse deployment to the unlawful war and occupation in Iraq. While doing this on June 22, 2006, Watada said, "As the order to take part in an illegal act is ultimately unlawful as well, I must refuse that order."

Just as Watada took the stage and began to speak, over 50 members of Iraq Veterans Against the War filed in behind him. Watada, surprised by this and obviously taken aback by the symbolic act, turned back to the audience, took some deep breaths, then gave this speech: (full story)

As the 6am ceasefire takes effect... the real war begins posted by Robert Fisk, 2006-08-13 10:23:15
The real war in Lebanon begins today. The world may believe - and Israel may believe - that the UN ceasefire due to come into effect at 6am today will mark the beginning of the end of the latest dirty war in Lebanon after up to 1,000 Lebanese civilians and more than 30 Israeli civilians have been killed. But the reality is quite different and will suffer no such self-delusion: the Israeli army, reeling under the Hizbollah's onslaught of the past 24 hours, is now facing the harshest guerrilla war in its history. And it is a war they may well lose. (full story)

Neocons’ Middle East Scheme Is Backfiring posted by William Hughes via Portland imc, 2006-08-13 10:00:08
Back in 1996, a clique of Neocons, led by Richard Perle, concocted a scheme for Israel to “destabilize” the Middle East. The Palestinians were to be crushed and Iraq and Lebanon balkanized. The U.S. and UK were conned into doing the Neocons’ dirty work in Iraq. Now, Hezbollah fighters have tossed a huge wrench into the not-so-clever plot. Instead of Israel becoming “safer,” the Neocons have put its citizens at risk and its army in danger of defeat. (full story)

The Price of Inaction posted by Kingfisher, 2006-08-12 20:51:34
Consider the war in Lebanon a test scenario, a ‘dry run’ to test the international response to flagrant criminal actions. Now recall Russia’s failure to support Yugoslavia in the Balkans. Russia stalled and now Yugoslavia is no more, just a number of fragmented pseudo States overseen by NATO and the largest U.S. base of occupation in Europe, camp Bondsteel. It is well known today that the USA wouldn’t have dared if Russia had supported its traditional ally, but a drunken fool, Boris Yeltsin, was in command at the time, the rest is history. The Face of Terror, Menachem Begin: Co-founder of IDF One Month in Lebanon posted by peptide, 2006-08-10 18:53:21
The war in Lebanon is one month and hundreds of innocent lives old; the international community is displaying all the coherence and cohesion it did in 1939 – déjà vu! The solution today is as it should have been then – stop the invader with a confederation of nations opposed to the war. It stops! Count the nations for war, two, against the war, the rest of the world! (full story)

Atomic blast that some Evangelicals welcome! Lobbying for Armageddon posted by Sarah Posner via strafe, 2006-08-06 18:44:10
"While the crisis at the Israel-Lebanon border drew more mainstream media attention to CUFI's activities, Hagee's supporters have long known that leading Republicans are listening. Rabbi Daniel Lapin, a prominent Jewish ally of the evangelical right (and friend of Jack Abramoff) has said that Hagee "without question, yes, absolutely" has the ear of the White House. Hagee's annual Night to Honor Israel at his church has drawn prominent Republicans, including Tom DeLay, who was the keynote speaker in 2002." (full story and 2 comments)

Secularism and Perversity posted by nano, 2006-08-06 06:38:27
The world we live in today is characterised by States adopting the methodologies of organised crime. The traditional methods of criminal organizations have been legitimised by expropriation; no longer are deception, violence, theft, disregarding social codes/contracts the sole province of the sub-culture of organised crime they are now openly employed methods of various conservative governments around the globe – most notably, the USA, UK and Australia.
