I am staggered. There are 10,000 ‘NGOs’ (Non-Governmental Organizations) in Haiti, one for every 900 inhabitants and each one of them has no doubt at least one Westerner working within, yet aside from the Cuban health workers, it seems they could do nothing until the gringos arrived with their Blackhawks and nuclear-tipped aircraft carrier and of course, the 82nd Airborne, paying yet another ‘visit’ to this benighted and super-exploited land to ’secure’ the place for the locust storm of aid to come (too late for too many). The title refers to a radical Christian text that almost didn’t make into the New Testament, I would add here that what is NEW and reformed makes redundant and OBSOLETE what is OLD, referring to Jewish teaching in the OLD Testament. In other words all direction and guidance for Christians is to be obtained from the New Testament, as is clearly indicated in Hebrews 8:13 -- but to the advice couched in REVELATION 3: 15-16. This term is really their euphemism for the enforced disappearance of persons and their consequent torture. On rare occasions when a broadcaster or newspaper breaks ranks and reports 'our' crimes honestly, it is instructive to observe the response from the rest of the media. Do they follow suit, perhaps digging deeper for details, devoting space to profiles of the victims and interviews with grieving relatives, humanising all concerned?
