What an utterly tragic and perfect disgrace. The first family of the USA is all smiles while other ‘less human’ families and children are blown to bits or lay dying in hospitals deprived of medicines and supplies – the result of an Israeli blockade and murderous attack on Gaza! We are reminded of the Clinton embargo on Iraq which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi ‘sub-human’ children; a price considered “worth it” by former Democrat Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright -- a taste of things to come! Obama is the first president to face stark and overwhelming evidence of crimes -- including torture, war crimes and a host of violations relating to various international laws and conventions -- committed by a previous administration. These crimes are not trifling matters and any attempt to avoid dealing with them would forever (historically) stain Obama – a legacy the first black man in the White House ought to be at pains to avoid. American forces prevented 'military-age' males (roughly 12-65 years old) from leaving the city and then declared a 'free-fire zone' on anyone remaining. They used white phosphorus and thermobaric weapons. They used snipers against unarmed civilians. They killed, and killed, and killed. It was like Poppy's 'Highway of Death', but worse. Amidst the somewhat hysterical euphoria of the Obama win is the fact that he has some very sober decisions to make, and his choice of Chief of Staff (Rahm Emanuel has already had to apologise for remarks by his once-terrorist father) does not auger well. Why choose someone who has served in Israel’s brutal IDF and who is rabidly anti-Palestinian? Is this ‘Change’? Also disturbing is talk of retaining Secretary of Defense Robert Gates with all his Iran-Contra baggage. Or Madeleine Albright who insanely stated that the undisputed deaths of 500,000 Iraqi children (under the age of five) during the (ineffectual to Saddam) sanctions following Gulf War I were ‘worth it’. Or possibly appointing Paul Volker to head Treasury. Change? This sounds like Business As Usual. (full story)

Marlise Simons, the New York Times' main reporter on the Milosevic trial and International Criminal Trial for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), has had a difficult year. Perhaps most painful was the disclosure that in 1999 the Kosovo Albanian KLA sent as many as 300 captive Serbs to Albania to be killed and their internal organs "harvested" for sale abroad; a matter barely mentioned in the New York Times (see below). I was sorely tempted to write to Marlise Simons and offer her my sympathies, "Marlise, if only the villains in this case were Serbs, what a fine front page article you could have had!" (full story)
