On Saturday night, I was lucky enough to be at the Veterans for Peace National Convention. For that night, Lt. Ehren Watada was able to give the following speech, which I've just received permission to post here. The speech was met with a powerful, standing ovation from the vets who've been there.
Lt. Ehren Watada, for those who don't already know, became the first commissioned officer to publicly refuse deployment to the unlawful war and occupation in Iraq. While doing this on June 22, 2006, Watada said, "As the order to take part in an illegal act is ultimately unlawful as well, I must refuse that order."
Just as Watada took the stage and began to speak, over 50 members of Iraq Veterans Against the War filed in behind him. Watada, surprised by this and obviously taken aback by the symbolic act, turned back to the audience, took some deep breaths, then gave this speech: (full story)

The real war in Lebanon begins today. The world may believe - and Israel may believe - that the UN ceasefire due to come into effect at 6am today will mark the beginning of the end of the latest dirty war in Lebanon after up to 1,000 Lebanese civilians and more than 30 Israeli civilians have been killed. But the reality is quite different and will suffer no such self-delusion: the Israeli army, reeling under the Hizbollah's onslaught of the past 24 hours, is now facing the harshest guerrilla war in its history. Back in 1996, a clique of Neocons, led by Richard Perle, concocted a scheme for Israel to “destabilize” the Middle East. The Palestinians were to be crushed and Iraq and Lebanon balkanized. The U.S. and UK were conned into doing the Neocons’ dirty work in Iraq. Now, Hezbollah fighters have tossed a huge wrench into the not-so-clever plot. Instead of Israel becoming “safer,” the Neocons have put its citizens at risk and its army in danger of defeat. (full story)

Consider the war in Lebanon a test scenario, a ‘dry run’ to test the international response to flagrant criminal actions. Now recall Russia’s failure to support Yugoslavia in the Balkans. Russia stalled and now Yugoslavia is no more, just a number of fragmented pseudo States overseen by NATO and the largest U.S. base of occupation in Europe, camp Bondsteel. It is well known today that the USA wouldn’t have dared if Russia had supported its traditional ally, but a drunken fool, Boris Yeltsin, was in command at the time, the rest is history. The war in Lebanon is one month and hundreds of innocent lives old; the international community is displaying all the coherence and cohesion it did in 1939 – déjà vu! The solution today is as it should have been then – stop the invader with a confederation of nations opposed to the war. It stops! Indirectly confirmed by John Bolton, U.S. Ambassador to the UN (and sociopath) in a public statement; the first casualty of war is LANGUAGE – the needless slaughter of innocent children in Qana by an Israeli airstrike was an “accident of war!” In the face of an obvious war crime it is now incumbent on the Bush regime, especially its representatives Bolton and Rice, to define the rules of engagement and what constitutes a war crime. We do not forget how quick the U.S. and NATO were to condemn war crimes in the Balkan conflict – it would seem that allies of the U.S. (Israel) are immune; their obvious crimes become tragic ‘accidents’ whereas those opposed to the U.S. are war criminals and liable to indefinite incarceration (‘Torture’ Bay) or trial in an ‘independent’ court at the Hague. The people are once again faced with a very real opportunity to act and change the status quo. The USA has abandoned its traditional 'act' of peacekeeper in the Middle East. Two clear prerogatives present themselves in the face of ongoing hostilities, a people’s movement or another nation filling the vacuum left by the U.S. (which has tragically become an involved party in the conflict). How many times must the opportunity for Peace go begging? (full story)

The middle of the twentieth century was the last occasion a belligerent nation stunned the world with violent military invasions. The major powers watched passively while a rogue military nation boldly occupied a number of sovereign states; the excuses offered by the aggressor at that time are similar to the inanities and diatribes the world is offered today by Israel and the U.S. However, some would make the distinction that the comments made by John Bolton and Condoleezza Rice are even less believable than the mendacious propaganda of Dr. Joseph Goebbels. Condoleezza Rice (finally) announced that she would visit the war torn Middle East in the near future – let’s not rush to the assistance of innocent civilians and perhaps even prevent a humanitarian disaster! Rice also dismissed any hope of brokering an immediate cease-fire. She added that negotiating a cease-fire would be counter-productive at present! The international community has noted America’s lethargy and unwillingness to act in the present circumstances. The world is aware however that Israel would not have pursued its present hostile course without prior consent from Washington; Rice’s inaction and firm dismissal of any hope of a brokered cease-fire spells very clearly the relationship between Washington and Tel Aviv. Whether you love them or hate them, Jews are nothing if not consistent. The first detailed record of genocide (committed by Jews) is in the Old Testament. As recorded in Jewish Scripture, the Jew Joshua claimed that Jehovah instructed him to slaughter the innocent civilian men, women, children and even babes on the tit in Canaanite cities and towns. These acts of barbaric atrocity were not problematic for the Jews of history or today’s Israeli Jews it would seem. He accused President George Bush of cowardice. He said, “Bush blinked” and authorized the European coalition (EU-3) “to approach Tehran with proposals to reward the mullahs if they promised to end their nuclear weapons program...The mullahs don’t blink--they glare...I know it is not too late for us, not to give substance to Bush’s words, not too late to redeem our honor.” I had to wonder if Perle cleared this personal attack on Bush, with Cheney?
