Obama’s first problem is US war crimes posted by Andrew Sullivan via reed, 2008-11-30 23:08:22 A small and largely unnoticed spat among the transition planners for the president-elect, Barack Obama, broke out last week. It was the first genuinely passionate debate among the Obamaites and it centres on a terribly difficult and terribly important decision that will be among the first that Obama has to make. CEOs 'cashed out' prior to economic crisis posted by Tom Eley via reed, 2008-11-28 19:14:06 Balzac’s maxim that “behind every great fortune lies a great crime” may yet prove a fitting epitaph for American capitalism. A recent survey by the Wall Street Journal reveals that CEOs at major US financial and real estate firms converted tens of millions of dollars of overvalued stock into cash prior to the eruption of the current financial crisis, even as many of their corporations approached the precipice. Bones [and Skeletons] posted by John S. Hatch via reed, 2008-11-28 00:54:30 American forces prevented 'military-age' males (roughly 12-65 years old) from leaving the city and then declared a 'free-fire zone' on anyone remaining. They used white phosphorus and thermobaric weapons. They used snipers against unarmed civilians. They killed, and killed, and killed. It was like Poppy's 'Highway of Death', but worse. Congratulations, Junior, you finally outdid the old man. Not even animals were spared. (full story and 1 comments) injustice/law / international
Google's next step towards domination of the Information Age posted by Nicholas Pullen via quill, 2008-11-27 19:46:34 [Numerous posts to this site (input google in search box) warned very early of Google's intention to monopolise ALL available data. The mass media has as usual been extremely sluggish in reporting real threats to our democracies and freedoms. However, perhaps from fear of its own future relevance, if Google succeeds with its plans, the mass media now reports on the Corporation that is without doubt the greatest threat to free thought and liberty in the world today. Moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue posted by Joseph L. Galloway via rialator, 2008-11-20 07:41:04 With two months still to go before his inauguration as the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama and his transition team are already getting off on the wrong foot, signaling that they have no intention of investigating anyone in the Bush administration for possible war crimes. Will an Obama Administration seek to restore justice? posted by John S. Hatch via krill, 2008-11-17 08:45:33 Amidst the somewhat hysterical euphoria of the Obama win is the fact that he has some very sober decisions to make, and his choice of Chief of Staff (Rahm Emanuel has already had to apologise for remarks by his once-terrorist father) does not auger well. Why choose someone who has served in Israel’s brutal IDF and who is rabidly anti-Palestinian? Is this ‘Change’? Also disturbing is talk of retaining Secretary of Defense Robert Gates with all his Iran-Contra baggage. Or Madeleine Albright who insanely stated that the undisputed deaths of 500,000 Iraqi children (under the age of five) during the (ineffectual to Saddam) sanctions following Gulf War I were ‘worth it’. Or possibly appointing Paul Volker to head Treasury. Change? This sounds like Business As Usual. (full story) injustice/law / international
Air Marshals: Undercover and Under Arrest posted by Michael Grabell via reed, 2008-11-15 08:07:56 Shawn Nguyen bragged that he could sneak anything past airport security using his top-secret clearance as a federal air marshal. And for months, he smuggled cocaine and drug money onto flights across the country, boasting to an FBI informant that he was "the man with the golden badge." Censorship in the Western Media: What they Don't Want You to Know posted by Eric Sommer via quill, 2008-11-05 08:47:45 The Western media has recently outdone itself in censoring important stories - stories which contradict the policies and interests the media seeks to uphold.. Western publics have been systematically misled in recent weeks on vital issues related to war-and-peace, human rights, the financial crisis, and more. Only a few examples can be set out here. But it should be enough to indicate the extent to which world reality is being filtered by the media. (full story and 1 comments) mass media / international
Between Hope and Reality: An Open Letter to Barack Obama posted by Ralph Nader via reed, 2008-11-04 07:44:40 Dear Senator Obama:
In your nearly two-year presidential campaign, the words "hope and change," "change and hope" have been your trademark declarations. Yet there is an asymmetry between those objectives and your political character that succumbs to contrary centers of power that want not "hope and change" but the continuation of the power-entrenched status quo. More from the Front Lines of the Financial Crisis posted by Stephen Lendman via reed, 2008-11-03 08:52:32 In its latest economic outlook, Merrill Lynch economists "worry about inflation, or more precisely," a lack of it. From crashing global equity markets, falling commodity prices, rising unemployment, stagnant wages, over-indebted households, declining production, the continuing housing crisis, and more. All pointing to several future quarters of negative growth. Showing that Fed chairman Bernanke will face "his greatest fear: deflation." An analysis of the coincident to lagging indicators signals "deep recession." (full story and 1 comments) social equality/unity / international
