An Open Letter to the Chief Prosecutor of the ICC posted by David Swanson via rialator, 2008-07-18 09:33:30
Dear Chief Prosecutor,

Congratulations on your request for an arrest warrant for the president of Sudan. When the rule of law cannot be justly enforced within a nation, it must be enforced internationally. In that regard, I would like to recommend that you seek an arrest warrant for the president of my nation, the United States of America. I have read your letter of February 9, 2006, in which you decline to seek prosecution of George W. Bush, and I believe new evidence compels another review. (full story)

Quiet, please! posted by Ursula Sautter and Mary Pinkowish via quill, 2008-07-15 10:44:29
A leaf blower, snow blower, lawn mower and two huge dogs—Peter D’Epiro can describe in excruciating detail how his neighbour’s lawn equipment and pets ruined summer afternoons and dinner parties for him and his wife for more than a decade in Ridgewood, New Jersey. But he’d rather not. “I can barely think about that situation without rushing for the Valium or the IV gin drip,” he says. (full story)

Lula, Horta, and lackey Gusmao Ramos-Horta learning realpolitik posted by AFP via reed, 2008-07-12 00:01:24
If anyone is qualified to assist the former Portuguese Colony of Timor-Leste, it’s the former Portuguese colony, Brazil! Principally because former colonies face similar problems and the last thing Timor-Leste needs at this time is another patronising white nation interfering in local politics and development. Lula’s record is proven and his credentials impeccable, impossible to beat! (full story)

How Britain/America/NATO wage war posted by John Pilger via rialator, 2008-07-11 22:07:09
The military has created a wall of silence around its frequent resort to barbaric practices, including torture, and goes out of its way to avoid legal scrutiny. (full story and 1 comments)

Worse than McCain posted by Mike Whitney via reed, 2008-07-11 21:33:53
Every four years, liberals and progressives are expected to set aside their beliefs and stand foursquare behind the Democratic Party candidate. This ritual is invariably performed in the name of party unity. It doesn't matter if the candidate is a smooth-talking politician who's willing to toss his Pastor of 20 years overboard for a few awkward comments, or whether he refuses to defend basic civil liberties like the 4th amendment's right to privacy. All that matters is that there's a big "D" following his name and that he shows he's willing to engage in some meaningless verbal jousting with his Republican opponent. (full story)

Stop the new FISA posted by Chris Hedges via quill, 2008-07-11 20:41:17
If the sweeping surveillance law signed by President Bush on Thursday -- giving the U.S. government nearly unchecked authority to eavesdrop on the phone calls and e-mails of innocent Americans -- is allowed to stand, we will have eroded one of the most important bulwarks to a free press and an open society. The Letter to Bush Obama Didn’t Write posted by William A. Cook via rialator, 2008-07-02 22:51:18
Dear Mr. President,

A fundamental principle of America’s Middle East policy must be our unshakeable commitment to Palestinian security. I believe that is a bipartisan commitment, and I will work to continue and advance that consensus. But I am deeply concerned that the security of the people of Palestine has been put at greater risk, both because of renewed threats from their implacable enemy, the State of Israel, and because of policy choices by the United States. Neo-cons subverting the US Justice Department and Democracy posted by Eric Lichtblau via rialator, 2008-06-25 09:53:38
WASHINGTON -- Justice Department officials over the last six years illegally used “political or ideological” factors to hire new lawyers into an elite recruitment program, tapping law school graduates with conservative credentials over those with liberal-sounding resumes, a new report found Tuesday. State-Sponsored Terror: British and American Black Ops in Iraq posted by Andrew G. Marshall via fleet, 2008-06-25 09:15:27
In January of 2002, the Washington Post ran a story detailing a CIA plan put forward to President Bush shortly after 9/11 by CIA Director George Tenet titled, "Worldwide Attack Matrix," which was "outlining a clandestine anti-terror campaign in 80 countries around the world. What he was ready to propose represented a striking and risky departure for U.S. policy and would give the CIA the broadest and most lethal authority in its history." The plan entailed CIA and Special Forces "covert operations across the globe," and at "the heart of the proposal was a recommendation that the president give the CIA what Tenet labeled "exceptional authorities" to attack and destroy al Qaeda in Afghanistan and the rest of the world." Tenet cited the need for such authority "to allow the agency to operate without restraint -- and he wanted encouragement from the president to take risks." Among the many authorities recommended was the use of "deadly force." (full story)

Pelosi and Bush colluding/subverting democracy U.S. 'bipartisanship' defined posted by Glenn Greenwald via krill, 2008-06-21 20:34:22
It's bad enough watching the likes of Steny Hoyer, Rahm Emanuel and a disturbingly disoriented Nancy Pelosi eviscerate the Fourth Amendment, exempt their largest corporate contributors from the rule of law, and endorse the most radical aspects of the Bush lawbreaking regime. But it's downright pathetic to see them try to depict their behavior as some sort of bipartisan "compromise" whereby they won meaningful concessions: (full story)

'Milton' Bush The Bitter harvest of Bush's economic 'management' posted by Mike Whitney via reed, 2008-06-17 22:11:10
[We have it on good authority that those responsible for the current economic collapse -- insider elites -- are making contingency plans to evade responsibility and future arrest. It is imperative that these corporate criminals are monitored, as they are likely to flee to nations that do not have extradition treaties with the home nation. Maintain tracking of all felons (and war criminals); the peoples' demand for justice must be satisfied! Ed]

The economy is in tatters. Consumer confidence has plummeted, food and energy prices are soaring, and the housing market is experiencing its biggest crash since the Great Depression. Manufacturing is down, unemployment is up, gasoline is topping $4 per gallon, and tent cities are sprouting up throughout the Southwest. If there's a silver lining to this mess; it's not visible from planet earth. (full story)
