A funding request sent to Congress this week seeks $196.4bn (£95.8bn) for counter-terrorism in 2007-8, $25bn up on this year. The Pentagon's separate budget request amounts to an additional $481.4bn. Outsourcing Government posted by Naomi Klein via reed, 2007-10-23 22:35:50 "We didn't want to get stuck with a lemon." That's what Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said to a House committee last month. He was referring to the "virtual fence" planned for the U.S. borders with Mexico and Canada. If the entire project goes as badly as the 28-mile prototype, it could turn out to be one of the most expensive lemons in history, projected to cost $8 billion by 2011. Watada: What's a (thoughtful) lieutenant to do? posted by Dean Paton via rialator, 2007-10-19 14:04:31 OCT 5 2007 -- Let's assume Lt. Col. John Head, the Army judge who presided over the first court-martial of Lt. Ehren Watada last February, used impeccable legal reasoning when he denied Watada the right to insist that the war in Iraq is illegal -- which, the young soldier says, makes it his sworn duty to protect the Constitution by refusing to fight in such a war. The Putin Touch posted by staff report WSJ via reed, 2007-10-16 12:57:35 Mr. Putin's message to Condoleezza Rice and Bob Gates: "Of course, we can some time in the future decide that some anti-missile defense should be established somewhere on the moon," said Mr. Putin, with more sarcasm than wit. Watada's trial, slated to begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday, is now postponed until at least Oct. 26, the judge ruled. (full story) peace/war / international
Climate Change and Entire Landscapes on the Move posted by Stephen Leahy via reed, 2007-10-05 23:37:56 BROOKLIN, Canada - The hot breath of global warming has now touched some of the coldest northern regions of world, turning the frozen landscape into mush as temperatures soar 15 degrees C. above normal. Entire hillsides, sometimes more than a kilometre long, simply let go and slid like a vast green carpet into valleys and rivers on Melville Island in Canada’s northwest Arctic region of Nunavut this summer, says Scott Lamoureux of Queens University in Canada and leader of one the of International Polar Year projects. Loaded Language and Loaded Guns posted by Charles Sullivan via rialator, 2007-10-03 22:33:39 One can no longer understand US governmental policy on the basis of conventional language or traditional wisdom. Language itself and its long-established meanings were long ago twisted and distorted in order to deceive the people. Now war is peace and terror and occupation is liberation. In order to make sense of what is happening, it is important to understand everything within the context of a specific economic philosophy, and the distorted capitalist system that spawned it. The [U.S.] Administration’s plan for Iran posted by Seymour M. Hersh via reed, 2007-10-01 14:40:28 The New Yorker -- October 8, 2007 -- In a series of public statements in recent months, President Bush and members of his Administration have redefined the war in Iraq, to an increasing degree, as a strategic battle between the United States and Iran. “Shia extremists, backed by Iran, are training Iraqis to carry out attacks on our forces and the Iraqi people,” Bush told the national convention of the American Legion in August. “The attacks on our bases and our troops by Iranian-supplied munitions have increased. . . The Iranian regime must halt these actions. And, until it does, I will take actions necessary to protect our troops.” He then concluded, to applause, “I have authorized our military commanders in Iraq to confront Tehran’s murderous activities.” (full story) peace/war / international

Failing banks, toxic bonds and mortgage laundering posted by Mike Whitney via rialator, 2007-09-17 20:03:05 “The entire global financial structure is becoming uncontrollable in crucial ways that its nominal leaders never expected, and instability is its hallmark. The scope and operation of international financial markets, their “architecture”, as establishment experts describe it, has evolved haphazardly and its regulation is inefficient — indeed, almost nonexistent. Banks do not understand the chain of exposure and who owns what: senior financial regulators and bankers now admit this.” Gabriel Kolko “An Economy of Buccaneers and Fantacists” (full story and 1 comments) social/political / international
