Washington gets a [temporary] new colony in the Balkans posted by Sara Flounders via reed, 2008-02-27 21:53:25 In evaluating the recent "declaration of independence" by Kosovo, a province of Serbia, and its immediate recognition as a state by the U.S., Germany, Britain and France, it is important to know three things.
First, Kosovo is not gaining independence or even minimal self-government. It will be run by an appointed High Representative and bodies appointed by the U.S., European Union and NATO. An old-style colonial viceroy and imperialist administrators will have control over foreign and domestic policy. U.S. Imperialism has merely consolidated its direct control of a totally dependent colony in the heart of the Balkans. (full story) imperialism / international
The Audacity of Hopelessness posted by Frank Rich via reed, 2008-02-24 11:24:02 When people one day look back at the remarkable implosion of the Hillary Clinton campaign, they may notice that it both began and ended in the long dark shadow of Iraq. It’s not just that her candidacy’s central premise — the priceless value of “experience” — was fatally poisoned from the start by her still ill-explained vote to authorize the fiasco. Senator Clinton then compounded that 2002 misjudgment by pursuing a 2008 campaign strategy that uncannily mimicked the disastrous Bush Iraq war plan. After promising a cakewalk to the nomination — “It will be me,” Mrs. Clinton told Katie Couric in November — she was routed by an insurgency. (full story) social/political / international
The Other Face of Google posted by Michael Y. Park via reed, 2008-02-20 08:19:31 NEW YORK — How big do you have to be to earn the wrath of the United Nations and Internet giant Google? If you're journalist Matthew Lee, all it takes are some critical articles and a scrappy little Web site. Lee is the editor-in-chief, Webmaster and pretty much the only reporter for Inner City Press, a pint-sized Internet news operation that's taken on Goliath-sized entities like Citigroup since 1987. Does Balkanization Beckon Anew? posted by Patrick J. Buchanan via fleet, 2008-02-20 08:11:57 When the Great War comes, said old Bismarck, it will come out of "some damn fool thing in the Balkans." On June 28, 1914, Gavrilo Princip shot the Archduke and heir to the Austrian throne Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, setting in motion the train of events that led to the First World War.
In the spring of 1999, the United States bombed Serbia for 78 days to force its army out of that nation's cradle province of Kosovo. The Serbs were fighting Albanian separatists of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). And we had no more right to bomb Belgrade than the Royal Navy would have had to bombard New York in our Civil War. Whistle-blower site taken offline posted by staff report BBC via reed, 2008-02-18 10:22:11 [We are not surprised by the following report of information suppression on the Internet. We have never harboured any illusions regarding just who it is that demands free speech be sacrificed on the altar of profit and expediency. Is it a coincidence that Big Business in the form of a Swiss Bank -- no less -- has taken action to stifle a web site dedicated to anonymous leaks? How else could leaks be safely disseminated?
In the interests of the community, democracy and free speech we are obliged to offer this site as a temporary outlet for such information.] (full story and 1 comments) mass media / international
Israel faces future annihilation as Bush delivers ultimatum to Gulf States posted by Mike Whitney via rialator, 2008-02-04 09:19:11 Mike Whitney’s articles are always insightful and entertaining though some titles could do with a little modification. We are always happy for his work to be included in our “other press” section; however, his latest effort begs additional analysis. We would be pleased if he or others familiar with the subject would contribute additional information and pursue their analysis and deductions to logical conclusions.
An obvious question is why should Gulf States compromise their own economies and acquiesce to Bush’s ultimatum if Russian Naval and Air Power in the region are poised for action? Neither Israel nor the USA is in a position to declare war on the entire region. Any such action would inevitably involve Russia and China – so let’s hear it from the informed experts! Ed. Kosovo: justification for a retaliatory attack on the USA posted by Michel Chossudovsky via reed, 2008-02-03 20:14:52 While the European Union and the US, have acknowledged that they would be "opposed" to a " unilateral" declaration of independence of Kosovo, the secession of Kosovo from Serbia is already de facto. It is part of a US-NATO military agenda. It is the culmination of the 1999 NATO led invasion. It responds to US-NATO strategic objectives. (full story) imperialism / international

Clitoral Economics posted by Barbara Ehrenreich via rialator, 2008-01-22 13:37:43 With all the talk about how to stimulate it, you'd think that the economy is a giant clitoris. Ben Bernanke may not employ this imagery, but the immediate challenge--and the issue bound to replace Iraq and immigration in the presidential race--is how best to get the economy engorged and throbbing again. A Quechua Christmas Story posted by Greg Palast via reed, 2007-12-31 16:12:15 And [Professor] Doctor Correa is one tough character. He told George Bush to take the US military base and stick it where the equatorial sun don’t shine. He told the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, which held Ecuador’s finances by the throat, to go to hell. He ripped up the “agreements” which his predecessors had signed at financial gun point. He told the Miami bond vultures that were charging Ecuador usurious interest, to eat their bonds. He said ‘We are not going to pay off this debt with the hunger of our people. ” Food first, interest later. Much later. And he meant it. (full story) imperialism / international
