Maxine McKew I read the polls today, O boy! posted by peptide, 2007-08-12 12:11:48
Australians are suffering from Poll fatigue resulting from an onslaught of opinion and other polls saturating the media in the approach to the Federal election. It has become apparent to the dimmest of commentators and analysts that the polls are being utilised as a political weapon. Public opinion is the prize and the new purveyors of public opinion are the pollsters. (full story)

Conservatism and anal retention posted by fish, 2007-08-11 14:06:41
Conservatives throughout the world are only distinguished by the ‘colour of their shirts.’ Islamist contractionism pursues (fascist) central control in the form of a Caliphate. American contractionism is pursuing (totalitarianism) surveillance and the reduction of liberties and freedoms at speed. Here in Oz the minister for communications is attempting to implement information controls in the form of filtering Internet material at backbone or ISP level. Regardless of the area of ‘concern’ ALL conservatives SEEK TO GAIN CONTROL and impose their realities onto everyone! The means vary from theocratic coercion, legal subversions to brutal enforcement and violent implementations, whether the rest of us like it or not. No shortage of anal contractionists exists anywhere in the world today – the amusing thing is watching the same sickness manifest in various cultural forms. (full story and 1 comments)

China’s 'Nuclear Option' is real posted by Paul Craig Roberts via rialator, 2007-08-10 13:53:15
Twenty-four hours after I reported China’s announcement that China, not the Federal Reserve, controls US interest rates by its decision to purchase, hold, or dump US Treasury bonds, the news of the announcement appeared in sanitized and unthreatening form in a few US news sources. The Washington Post found an economics professor at the University of Wisconsin to provide reassurances that it was “not really a credible threat” that China would intervene in currency or bond markets in any way that could hurt the dollar’s value or raise US interest rates, because China would hurt its own pocketbook by such actions. The Lackey and the President posted by yarra, 2007-08-10 12:46:53
George Bush demonstrates his sovereignty over his newest colonial acquisition, Australia! Bush has thrown the highly coordinated security plans for the APEC summit in Sydney into disarray by arriving two days earlier than was previously arranged. The chaos and disruption this ill-considered change in plans will cause will be enormous. But what choice does a lackey prime minister and a subservient population have? The King of America and colonies, Iraq and Australia, has spoken and we can but find joy in licking Bush’s arse! (full story and 1 comments)

BBQ Chicken posted by dada, 2007-08-09 01:16:03
I usually pick up a BBQ Chicken at the end of the week, more from a need to avoid cooking than as a treat. I hadn’t seen the shop assistant who served me before, he was very particular about which chicken I selected, he gently prodded a few, very gently turned a few over all the while commenting on moisture content, texture and oven position. Very dedicated I thought as I pointed to a small plump chicken. The attendant smiled approvingly at my selection. As he placed the chicken in a take-away BBQ bag he gave me a knowing wink and said, “good selection, the pretty ones are not for eating." He then ritualistically handed the bag to me with both hands as if making an offering. Very odd behaviour I thought as I headed for the fresh vegetable section to obtain salad ingredients. The Alice Report – when a nation takes Leave posted by dingo, 2007-08-08 13:27:29
Oz nous has gone on holiday it would seem; the Prime Minister this week denied, on national television, all reports and accusations that he is dishonest! People arose from comas at the announcement, my demented granny who hasn’t spoken or reacted to the outside world in years, leapt out of her invalid chair and screamed, “shoot the little war criminal!” People all over the nation choked on their dinners but the best is yet to come. Murdoch blunders with Bloggers posted by gan, 2007-08-07 00:13:48
A blunder of truly huge proportions is uncharacteristic of master media manipulator/mogul Rupert Murdoch. Allowing his Fox news ‘attack dog,’ Bill (bow wow) O’Reilly to attack something he has no hope of either influencing or overcoming is a gross miscalculation. The blogosphere is becoming the first choice for news and opinion for many readers tired of the fabricated fantasies and thin propaganda the mass media constantly spews at the public. (full story)

Hacking Capitalism posted by Andy Greenberg via Kismo, 2007-08-06 22:28:04
LAS VEGAS -- Lost seconds mean lost dollars on Wall Street. But the race for faster transactions risks security disaster.

Employees of banks could shut down computers that make quick arbitrage trades across markets, using denial-of-service attacks to overwhelm servers and potentially cause millions in losses. Ultra-fast electronic trades may be especially vulnerable to sabotage. And the need for speed has made things worse -- with financial institutions avoiding software security features that might cause crucial millisecond delays. (full story)

déjà vu When 2nd is preferable posted by major mitchell, 2007-08-05 21:47:52
Few wish to be second in any type of endeavour; however, there is one occasion, among few others, where it is imperative to be second; and that is when a nation desires to detonate a nuclear weapon -- or more precisely, use nuclear weaponry in circumstances/conflicts that do NOT warrant their use. A little leak/rumour has it that a “dirty nuke” is to be detonated in the continental USA in order to justify the use of “bunker busters” on Iran and other areas of conflict. (full story)

The democratic prerogative: whose world? posted by fish, 2007-08-05 13:11:03
What did you expect?

If you place liars and criminals in government do you expect justice and peace, or war, plunder and destruction? There is NOT one honest person today that leads a nation – all are corrupt, do you expect honesty and integrity from sewer rats? Liars and jackals reign supreme and occupy all the seats of power; do you expect consideration, fair treatment or cynicism and deception? (full story)

Stock Market Meltdown posted by Mike Whitney via rialator, 2007-08-04 23:31:19
On Friday the Dow Jones took a 280 point nosedive on fears that that losses in the subprime market will spill over into the broader economy and cut into GDP. Ever since the two Bears Sterns hedge funds folded a couple weeks ago the stock market has been writhing like a drug-addict in a detox-cell. Yesterday’s sell-off added to last week’s plunge that wiped out $2.1 trillion in value from global equity markets. New York investment guru, Jim Rogers said that the real market is “one of the biggest bubbles we’ve ever had in credit” and that the subprime rout “has a long way to go.” (full story)

Looming Oz Federal Election: don’t be fooled again! posted by Kingfisher, 2007-08-04 12:53:59
“Fooled” in what sense? Surely it’s as simple as voting for the Party of your choice? That would be the response from most people and that is the problem. Party voting is offering the choice between gangrene or an amputation, as an American once put it! (full story)

Kevin Rudd: nobody’s man posted by cleaves, 2007-08-03 13:00:48
Who or what is a Kevin Rudd? Who does he represent, what distinguishes him from his conservative opponent, John Howard? In answer to the first question, NOTHING, Rudd is a proven non-entity; he represents no one I am able to locate, notwithstanding many Australians will vote against Howard but not for Rudd. There is nothing that distinguishes Rudd from Howard; he is only a paler version, a conservative with a lower case “c”. Rudd has supported Howard on more occasions than he has opposed him – and for those who may be wondering, yes, Rudd is the ‘opposition’ leader. (full story)
