David Hicks Oklahoma bombing conspirator claim posted by Pamela Manson via rialator, 2007-03-01 08:07:41
Much is being made of laws instituted after the Oklahoma bombing and the Hicks prosecution. The American prosecutors of David Hicks and the Australian Attorney General, Philip Ruddock, have made reference to these laws in relation to the Hicks case.

The following article from The Salt Lake Tribune today throws new light on the original bombing. At the very least these claims need to be fully investigated, as the resulting additions to American Law are now instrumental in the prosecution of the Australian citizen, David Hicks. (full story)

David Hicks: 5 years of Torture American Torture on Trial posted by Naomi Klein via rialator, 2007-02-26 21:07:07
February 26, 2007 -- Something remarkable is going on in a Miami courtroom. The cruel methods US interrogators have used since September 11 to "break" prisoners are finally being put on trial. This was not supposed to happen. The Bush Administration's plan was to put José Padilla on trial for allegedly being part of a network linked to international terrorists. But Padilla's lawyers are arguing that he is not fit to stand trial because he has been driven insane by the government. (full story)

The US, the world's hedge fund posted by Max Fraad Wolff via rialator, 2007-02-26 11:00:51
There are some strange facts about the asset and trade positions of the US economy in the globalizing economy. The United States runs massive and growing trade deficits, is borrowing at a clip that would arouse the suspicions of a casino pit boss, and has been selling its assets to anyone who will buy. In the past 24 months, the US balance on goods and services comes in just shy of negative-$1.5 trillion. Across the same period, the US has sunk further into debt to the rest of the world. America is secretly funding militant ethnic separatist groups in Iran in an attempt to pile pressure on the Islamic regime to give up its nuclear programme.

In a move that reflects Washington's growing concern with the failure of diplomatic initiatives, CIA officials are understood to be helping opposition militias among the numerous ethnic minority groups clustered in Iran's border regions. (full story)

When Superpowers go Rogue posted by peptide, 2007-02-25 12:52:41
History records instances of powerful, belligerent nations invading and annexing weaker nations in their bid for world domination and plunder. Various pretexts are utilised to justify these attacks/invasions, the most familiar and infamous are the USS Liberty attack, the Tonkin Gulf incident and more recently the imaginary WMD 'threat'. These examples have one thing in common; they are all orchestrated in order to harness the public as a manageable resource to be used and abused by prevailing powers and to justify an otherwise illegal invasion or military aggression. Nations bent on world domination are extremely predictable; world domination is the folly of a powerful military and inept leadership – history is familiar with a multitude of conquering clowns known to us today as mass murderers. Antiquated 'solutions': Howard and Cheney Desperation Politics posted by major mitchell, 2007-02-24 10:43:50
A picture is worth considerably more than a thousand words; the picture below depicts two very old and ossified conservatives unable to adequately deal with a rapidly changing New World. Antiquated and redundant divisionist ideologies have failed dramatically in today’s world – Iraq is the obvious example. (full story and 2 comments)

Dick Cheney -- unpopular in Oz Cheney’s speech at Sydney’s Shangri-la Hotel posted by finn, 2007-02-22 10:45:54
The American Vice-President, Dick Cheney, today delivered his only address to the ‘public’ at the plush Shangri-la Hotel. He will later meet with servile Defence Minister, Brendan Nelson, opposition leader Kevin Rudd and other minor government officials at Victoria Barracks, Paddington. The symbolism of Cheney’s visit in the last days of neo-conservative rule is not lost on Australians; the absence of Prime Minister, John Howard, from the venue was the most notable aspect of the event! Police outnumber protesters Preparing for Cheney posted by finch, 2007-02-21 09:05:56
See how Australian conservatives run! “No Australian should be surprised. In fact I would like to think they would support it ... The people who murdered 100 Australians in Bali trained in this place with these people and that's why we're there." The statement by the Australian Defence Minister, Brendan Nelson, is the latest despicable attempt to garner support and justify increased Australian military involvement in Afghanistan – the truth is the Howard government is at the beck and call of the Americans, that is why ‘we’ are in Afghanistan, Mr. Nelson. The Defence Minister, in preparation for Dick Cheney’s arrival in Sydney tonight, has resorted to flagrant LIES and K-Mart political tactics to demonstrate to Cheney that Australian conservatives are able emulators of their master’s cheap tricks and lying political methods. Tony (big girl) Blair Blair’s withdrawal ensures Iran Attack posted by nano, 2007-02-20 07:54:46
Today’s sudden announcement of troop withdrawal by Bush’s poodle, Tony Blair, portends a grim future for Iran. Faced with ruination and possible war crimes trials, the tattered remnants of the coalition of willing criminals will no doubt resort to desperate acts in a futile attempt to fulfil their agenda and create further chaos. Instability and perpetual WAR is the ideology of neo-conservatives – have no doubt that America and/or its few remaining allies (Israel) will soon attack Iran. (full story)

A Disorderly Retreat: Australian Conservatives on the Back Foot posted by peptide, 2007-02-19 21:45:02
The Australian Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer tonight made his first ’07 appearance on the popular current affairs program, Lateline. Downer, known locally as a gutless, smug, toff, was clearly on the back foot when confronted with the two principal issues that are decimating the conservative government; participation in the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq and the abandonment of the Australian citizen, David Hicks. Peter Costello Conservative Lunacy and Public Paralysis posted by nano, 2007-02-17 15:52:37
The Australian Federal Treasurer, Peter (supercilious prick) Costello today impetuously let one cat out of the (tactics) bag! Responding to a question relating to the economy, Costello took the opportunity to state that “the people wouldn’t trust their mortgages to the opposition party or to the leader of the opposition”. Tired fear tactics aside, Costello’s statement relates directly to the crippling debt the Australian public has been experiencing since the conservatives took office (hint!) The conservatives are the problem not the solution. (full story)
