Hicks case becomes Quicksand for Oz Government posted by budgie, 2007-03-31 14:54:49 When things are a bit slow we can always rely on the Australian conservative government to entertain us -- their now very desperate (divorced from reality) attempts to come out of the Hicks “saga” smelling roses are entertaining if nothing else. The impossibility of the Howard government looking good over any issue relating to Hicks hasn’t dampened the enthusiasm of the Federal Treasurer, Peter Costello. The Treasurer has very unwisely waded into the debate with characteristic arrogance and miscalculated comments directed at Hicks. Try as Costello might to incriminate Hicks and brand him a murderer, the facts defy his every attempt. (full story) social/political / national
David Hicks receives Sentence posted by dingo, 2007-03-30 10:49:10 Notice the use of language -- Australian news radio (12 noon) today broadcast that “convicted terrorist, David Hicks, receives nine month sentence...” – shame on ABC news radio, one can only wonder whether the choice of wording reflected the fundamentalist conservative, evangelical christian values of the Howard-loving producer, who will remain nameless in this report. Unlike American loving evangelical christians, most Australians accept “convictions” as a result of fair trials and due legal process NOT sordid kangaroo court 'determinations'. German Guantanamo victim accuses government posted by DW staff via rialator, 2007-03-29 13:28:12 Kurnaz accuses the German government of turning down an offer to release him from Guantanamo Bay in 2002: Germany's former interior minister Otto Schily has said he was "politically responsible" for the case of a German-born Turk who languished in Guantanamo Bay for nearly five years before being released without charge. How analysts in the Arab world see the Iraq war posted by Helena Cobban via rialator, 2007-03-28 13:13:06 LONDON -- Policymakers and strategic analysts in the Arab world have little confidence that current US troop surge in Iraq will do much more than – at best – postpone a complete political-security breakdown in Iraq, which, they fear, could then spread across the Middle East. During my lengthy recent discussions with experts in Egypt, Jordan, and Syria, and with some well-connected Iraqis in Jordan, I heard a lot about how Iraq's collapse has been affecting these Arab societies. American Justice: Hicks Tortured, Rumsfeld Exonerated! posted by Kingfisher, 2007-03-28 12:14:37 The now infamous Donald Rumsfeld has avoided legal responsibility for the extremely controversial ruling he made in December 2002, which effectively allowed the U.S. military to utilise torture methods against their perceived or imagined enemies. An American court ruled that Rumsfeld had no case to answer due principally to the fact that as Secretary of Defence he was IMMUNE from the charges! One Law for you and another for me! If the public ever wondered why Bush, Blair and Howard appear unconcerned over the prospect of war crimes charges, perhaps the Rumsfeld decision sheds some light on the matter. Howard blunders badly over Hicks Case posted by nano, 2007-03-27 12:14:51 John Howard, the servile Australian prime minister has probably ended his tenure in office over his blind, sycophantic support of the flagrantly illegal proceedings against the Australian citizen, David Hicks. Howard’s extraordinary support of a foreign power at the cost of his own nation and its values is a political blunder from which it is almost impossible to recover. The very widely known facts of the Kangaroo military proceedings against Hicks speak for themselves. Any nation that legalises torture, flouts the Geneva convention and International law; attacks civil liberties and human rights; denies habeas corpus; admits hearsay ‘evidence’ obtained under duress and torture has no legal or moral claim on the concept of justice whatsoever. The entire world (with the exception of John Howard) is cognisant of that fact! (full story) social/political / international
Aussie Torture Victim pleads ‘Guilty’ posted by finch, 2007-03-26 12:14:00 In circumstances that could only be described as ‘railroading’ and coercive, the Aussie battler, David Hicks has pleaded guilty to one count of providing material support to terrorists. Few Australians, including leading legal advocates accept the ‘trial’ of Hicks as legally legitimate. The flagrantly rogue court convened under the most biased and unfair conditions also disqualified Hicks’ civilian lawyers at the last minute. Hicks’ (now) disqualified lawyers accused the presiding judge, Lieutenant Colonel Ralph Kohlmann of making up the rules as he went along – there is nothing new in the ‘legal’ proceedings at Guantanamo Bay! What is Old is New posted by apollonius, 2007-03-24 11:51:25 Perhaps a brief interlude is warranted on this site. A few whispers from the past follow:
"And as all things have been arose from one by ye mediation of one: so all things have their birth from this one thing by adaptation."

The Failure of Modern Western Society posted by finn, 2007-03-23 14:12:25 Wind down from your artificially induced stress/pace and confront your personal reality – take stock for a moment. Your existence has been confined to sustaining and maintaining a system that makes ever-increasing demands on your liberty and freedom – the pillars upon which joy and satisfaction are built/derived! The frenzied pace of western society is largely the result of the manic need for ever increasing profits and greater concentrations of wealth in the fewest possible hands, which inevitably places higher demands on those at the bottom of the financial scale. Obtaining wealth is simply a matter of applying unfair downward pressure in favour of upward flowing benefits; wealth is not created it is the result of manipulation and/or theft – the historical record bears this out. Put simply, profit is exploitation/theft! (full story) social/political / international
Bolton admits Lebanon truce block posted by BBC via rialator, 2007-03-22 22:03:40 A former top American diplomat says the US deliberately resisted calls for a immediate ceasefire during the conflict in Lebanon in the summer of 2006. Former ambassador to the UN John Bolton told the BBC that before any ceasefire Washington wanted Israel to eliminate Hezbollah's military capability. New World Order posted by peptide, 2007-03-21 10:22:37 A recent article brought home the shocking truth of today’s new world order by contrasting the social outrage expressed against Richard Nixon for his minor offence of a break and enter (Watergate) with today's social complacency in the face of half-a-million civilian dead in Iraq. The office of president of the USA has become an experimental position where corporate placed buffoons are allowed to reign ruin on the world. The “bouquet of flowers, mission accomplished, WMD, give war a chance”, administration got it wrong from the start yet ‘bouquet’ Wolfowitz has been promoted to president of the World Bank, where he continues to bungle and lose to other interests (China). The incompetent clown, Bush, remains president and the criminals who benefit remain behind the scenes profiting on the misery of others! (full story) social/political / international
Slogans are Not Solutions posted by nano, 2007-03-20 22:48:02 In a recent speech delivered to a defence ‘think-tank’, the Australian Prime Minister John Howard displayed his total contempt for the Australian public and his audience by once again avoiding the real issues of the Iraq occupation. Howard refused to acknowledge the absolute fiasco and civilian death toll that he and fellow coalition leaders, Blair and Bush are directly responsible for. Rather than face the issues of a criminal invasion, subsequent oil plunder and a horrendous civilian death toll, Howard, in step with his American masters, echoed the same refrain as Bush. Howard asked that we forget four long years of absolute disaster and mismanagement and grant more time to the occupiers to essentially wreak more havoc on a nation that only wishes for the removal of all foreign troops from its soil. Bush, Blair could face War-crimes Charges posted by Staff report, 2007-03-18 19:41:45 George W. Bush and Tony Blair may face war crimes charges at the International Criminal Court over their military intervention and occupation of Iraq. The Internationally insignificant John Howard would face Australian courts prior to being handed over to the ICC. (full story) injustice/law / editorial
