Disguised Attack on Free Speech posted by jack, 2006-03-23 02:21:43 The digital revolution has created an imbalance in the supply of information, which has impacted heavily on minority ruling interests. Media moguls, minority interests and their puppet governments are lamenting the good ol’ days when the mass media supplied ‘disinfected’ information to a gullible population. Millions around the globe are now able to exchange information, become independent publishers and have a ‘voice’. It is not surprising that information from sources at an ‘event’ often contradicts popular reporting and tailored versions disseminated by the mass media and centralist governments. The Public Speaks for Itself posted by gan, 2006-03-20 13:06:56 As mainstream media and unrepresentative governments narrow the scope and range of social discourse, the public network has exploded with millions of ‘voices’ that continue the public discourse in a social space conveniently created by the forces that fear free expression most. The blogosphere is without competition as the primary body of free speech in today’s digital age. It is not unexpected that the content and character of independent speech is in contrast and opposition to the mainstream discourse of minority interests. It would seem that attempts to limit and tailor the social debate have resulted in unexpected consequences. (full story and 1 comments) mass media / international
Life against death posted by finch, 2006-03-18 03:27:10 The (coordinated) international protests and demonstrations against the war in Iraq indicate that people are unified in their fight against oppression, division, exploitation and violence. The way of the people is the way of peace, the majority decision is always for Peace, as the majority are aware that other options result in destruction if not annihilation. In contrast to the way of peace is the violence of the minority; the few that would wage war for the benefit of the few. It becomes plain to all, regardless of nationality, that ruling minorities are corrupt and do not serve the interests of the majority. (full story) social equality/unity / international
Oz visit: A Dose of U.S. Delusion from Rice posted by Kingfisher, 2006-03-16 12:42:59 Australia experienced a dose of Americana in the form of a visit from (divorced from reality) Condoleezza Rice, who maintains that Iraq is in a better position today than prior to the US invasion! The whole world is aware of the absolute DEBACLE that is Iraq and the ridiculous claims that were made prior to the invasion and now the absurd excuses from Wolfowitz, Rice and others, that everything will turn out fine in the end. Fairytale explanations do not ‘cut it’ outside the USA, Ms. Rice, what future or ‘end’ did you have in mind? The whole world is aware that you are ‘winging it’ or improvising as you go! But it’s a damn shame that kids and other innocents are dying while you and your criminally inept government lie and deceive. (full story and 1 comments) social/political / international
Storming the Bastille and Direct Action posted by nano, 2006-03-14 11:46:12 It should now be apparent to all that the usual strategies have proven ineffective against the ultra-right of today. The reasons are clear; the right is playing hard, fast and bold while the opposition is lost in analysis and navel gazing. ‘Storming the Bastille’ may again be required to precipitate change. Demos, alternative media, various forms of dissenting propaganda have all failed to alter the course of events. It would seem that while one side is playing hardball (for keeps) the other is content to fossick on the shores of world-shaping politics. (full story and 1 comments) social/political / international
Anachronism visits Australia posted by finch, 2006-03-12 02:45:29 Two high profile women visit Oz, an anachronism and a modern evolutionary equivalent, the Queen of England, Lizzy, and the US Secretary of State, Condy. The Australian cringe faces the focus of its pathological fears of independence. India, Pakistan and numerous tiny island ex-colonial nations have become independent but to Australia’s great shame it is yet unable to assert its full independence. Instead it has played its psychosis like an octave and transposed its complex to daddy America – chunder! (full story and 2 comments) imperialism / national
Glowing in the Dark posted by cleaves, 2006-03-09 11:58:09 The prospect of Iran developing a nuclear capability (which would realistically entail at least a five-year time frame) did not prevent John Bolton, US representative to the UN, stating that a “painful” response would be inflicted on Iran if it failed to comply with UN (American) dictates! Questions of the UN’s independence aside, is the focus on Iran a distraction from the debacle that is Iraq or is the USA following their PNAC strategy with little regard for consequences? US journalists targeted by Totalitarian Bush regime posted by nann, 2006-03-07 04:27:20 Bush and his ultra-right honchos are really pissed this time – in their efforts to track down a US loyalist, who spilt the beans on domestic spying, the Bush gestapo are now targeting journos and the free press. All the ‘security’ agencies at this megalomaniac’s disposal have been commandeered for the task. This attack on the free press is yet another devastating blow directed at the already battered body of American democracy and liberty. America, the home of the brave and the land of the free, has been relegated to the historical record. This new land is an abominable aberration of the original.
“..and we all shine on..” – in the dark!
[History does record that the American Revolution was won by a brave and fearless people – they are without doubt in extremely short supply today!] (full story) social/political / international
Christian Activism in Oz: Pine Gap Protest posted by Sean O'Reilly, 2006-03-06 11:50:23 On Friday in the Alice Springs Magistrate’s Court, magistrate Melanie Little found me not guilty of obstructing a Commonwealth official. The charge, which carries a maximum 2 years imprisonment, arose out of the Pine Gap 6’s action in December under the banner of Christians Against All Terrorism. After four of the group had been arrested inside the base attempting to carry out a citizen’s inspection, Jessica Morrison and I were detained by Commonwealth Protective Services (CPS) officers as we vigiled in support at the base entrance. As the traffic banked up in what eventually was a 4-hour lockdown of Pine Gap, I was arrested by officer David Parker after questioned his authority for searching our vehicle and removing cameras, banners and other belongings. On Monday, the assistant federal prosecutor for the Northern Territory, Mr. Paul Usher, presented evidence provided by Parker, fellow CPS officer, Veronica Maass, a further CPS officer and 2 N.T police officers. Corruption and Decline posted by peptide, 2006-03-03 04:17:57 Bush is not very good at anything, with that fact the world is fully acquainted, however, even the lowliest morons are usually good liars but recent video evidence has proven that Bush is not even skilled in the lowly art of lying. All doubts regarding Bush’s prior knowledge of the magnitude and destructive impact expected of Katrina have been dispelled by the release of video evidence clearly portraying Bush in full knowledge of the then pending emergency. We leave the pathological problem of Bush and the lying neo-cons in the incapable hands of the American people; the Bush regime is internationally known as the most deceitful and tawdry in American history. Good luck doodles, China and Russia could not hope for better! (full story) peace/war / international
Tail Pursuits: The meandering of men posted by ninn, 2006-03-02 01:42:22 We laugh when we see a dog chase its tail, yet are we so superior? Do we not seek what we already possess? The dog’s tail is not elsewhere or ‘external’, the dog thinks/believes its tail must be captured though it was never lost or disconnected. When people chase externals, Gods, religions, ideologies they seek that which they already possess (solace/identity/security/redemption/joy/harmony) yet it is the same canine ignorance that deludes people as deludes the poor dumb beast. To seek what one possesses is to lose it through the process of seeking – seeking is not possessing! (full story) miscellaneous / international
Bush Go Home posted by Arundhati Roy, 2006-02-28 12:05:27 On his triumphalist tour of this part of the world, where he hopes to wave imperiously at people he considers potential subjects, President Bush's itinerary is getting curiouser and curiouser. For his March 2 pit stop in New Delhi, the Indian government tried very hard to have him address our Parliament. A not inconsequential number of MPs threatened to heckle him, so Plan One was hastily shelved. Plan Two was that he address the masses from the ramparts of the magnificent Red Fort where the Indian prime minister traditionally delivers his Independence Day address. But the Red Fort, surrounded as it is by the predominantly Muslim population of Old Delhi, was considered a security nightmare. So now we're into Plan Three: President George Bush speaks from Purana Qila, the Old Fort. (full story and 1 comments) social/political / international
Austria, Hitler and Howard’s Australia posted by nano, 2006-02-26 14:38:01 Pauline Hanson recently announced on news radio that her political views have been “vindicated”; she cited the overt racist attitudes of John Howard and Peter Costello as proof of her claim. Who could deny it? Hanson’s imprisonment on trumped-up charges was an act of political assassination instigated by Howard but executed by his then errand boy, Tony Abbott. Hanson’s trial and subsequent imprisonment effectively eliminated her and her party from the Australian political landscape; mainstream racist ideology was re-established in its rightful home, the white Australian conservative ultra-right Liberal Party of Howard! The world watches Australia take a giant leap backwards as Howard continues to divide the nation. (full story and 1 comments) social equality/unity / national
Holy and Sacred: Turd or Temple posted by cleaves, 2006-02-24 01:55:00 The famous Shiite Askariyah shrine (Golden Mosque) in Iraq has been targeted and destroyed but by whom remains unclear at this stage. Regardless of the intentions of those responsible, one dramatic (and historically consistent) point cuts through the hysteria and mayhem. That of the importance (or otherwise) of sites that are deemed sacred or holy and the 'location' of this attribution in human consciousness and/or human societies/groups. Social history records naturally occurring phenomena, rocks, rivers etc; structures built by men, temples, obelisks etc; cyclic astronomical phenomena, eclipses, comets etc, all of which have been attributed by humans with special significance at one time or another, whereas none of these produced or naturally occurring phenomenon are ‘holy’ or ‘sacred’. Compromised US Military Considers Nuclear Option posted by peptide, 2006-02-21 16:21:47 Arab fighters and insurgents have demonstrated to the world that the US is a ‘superpower’ in name only. A poorly armed and trained but highly motivated and dedicated band of fighters has exposed the US military as weak, inept, unskilled, brutal and bereft. From South America to the Himalayas, resistance against capitalist plunder and exploitation signals the inevitable failure of militaristic capitalism. Regardless of all other considerations people today have confirmed that they will fight any aggressor who threatens their homes, families and way of life.
