Incarceration level: the clearest indicator of a viable society posted by yarra, 2009-02-20 21:06:01
No prizes for guessing the world’s NUMBER 1 incarcerator is the USA! Yessiree Bob, that utopian/dystopian capitalist wonderland/HELL is fast approaching its FATE – America is about to confront itself! The portrait of Dorian Gray looks like a Cherub in comparison. (full story and 2 comments)

Lobotomy for all! posted by Kwang zi, 2009-02-19 23:02:02
Up to 20,000 jobs will be shed as the Royal Bank of Scotland attempts to recover from the appalling mismanagement of its executive class. [Isn’t it always the way; rank and file workers PAY the PRICE for managerial failures?] Puppet governments bailout banks with taxpayers’ hard-earned money then banks, in ‘appreciation’ of OUR help, sack us in droves without a second thought – now that’s GRATITUDE for YOU! Affluent and beggar: why tolerate a two-tier society? IMF chief warns second wave of countries will require bail-out posted by Edmund Conway via reed, 2009-02-17 01:15:22
A "second wave" of countries will fall victim to the economic crisis and face being bailed out by the International Monetary Fund, its chief warned at the G7 summit in Rome. [IMF chief] Dominique Strauss-Kahn's warning comes amid growing concern that at some point in the next year a major economy could have to seek support from the Fund. Mr Strauss-Kahn, who was yesterday attending the Group of Seven leading finance ministers' meeting in Rome, said: "I expect a second wave of countries to come knocking." (full story and 4 comments)

Hugo Chavez, 'intoxicated!' Chavez, El Suprimo! posted by quin, 2009-02-15 20:55:38
‘Fair suck of the sav,’ Hugo; unlimited terms in office is NOT democratic, regardless of how the people were swayed to support it. Good leaders step down or defer to those more able to lead when the situation calls for it. Let’s not follow the Mugabe or Singapore dictatorship model in Venezuela, Hugo! (full story and 1 comments)

Nationalise the Banks posted by Matthew Richardson and Nouriel Roubini via reed, 2009-02-15 19:32:49
The U.S. banking system is close to being insolvent, and unless we want to become like Japan in the 1990s -- or the United States in the 1930s -- the only way to save it is to nationalize it.

As free-market economists teaching at a business school in the heart of the world's financial capital, we feel downright blasphemous proposing an all-out government takeover of the banking system. But the U.S. financial system has reached such a dangerous tipping point that little choice remains. And while Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner's recent plan to save it has many of the right elements, it's basically too late. (full story and 1 comments)

American genius, Dennis Blair Astounding! posted by finn, 2009-02-14 21:55:23
Who would have thought that invaded peoples in Indo-China, Central Asia, Africa, the Pacific Islands and other regions would fight for their traditional lands, homes, families and cultural identities? And who would have thought that people threatened with subservience to foreign cultures and ideologies would emphatically reject wearing baseball cap headdress – absolutely astounding? (full story)

International Criminal Court Faces Big Test With Israel posted by Amitabh Pal via fleet, 2009-02-14 00:01:10
The International Criminal Court soon faces a big test—a test that could reveal whether it is truly an independent institution.

The Palestinian Authority has asked the court’s chief prosecutor, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, to examine if Israel was guilty of war crimes during its recent Gaza operation. Moreno-Ocampo should take a look into the allegations, not the least to refute the assertion that the court is an instrument of the West. (full story and 1 comments)

The fix is in: Oz mandatory internet filtering posted by Kismo, 2009-02-12 23:30:46
Corporate errand boy and Oz Communications Minister, Stephen Conroy, has selected a group of minor (compliant) ISPs (see link) to conduct his INFORMATION CENSORSHIP tests. Telstra, iinet and Optus, by far the three largest carriers in the country, have ‘somehow’ been excluded from the tests, which would throw into question any results obtained with non-representative carriers – it’s a MATTER OF SCALE, stupid! Feeble response to massive drug production in NATO’s Afghanistan posted by Kingfisher, 2009-02-12 10:08:23
A ‘gem’ of counter intelligence was recently published in a Canadian Military Magazine. NATO commanders are attempting to justify/expand military activity in occupied Afghanistan by proposing that drug eradication be included in military field operations! An ‘interesting’ proposition in view of the fact that America has entered into deals with regional war lords allowing them to gain revenue from drug production in exchange for their support – it’s a dirty business, war, isn’t it?
