A Farewell to Arms Control posted by Scott Ritter via reed, 2007-07-05 12:26:35 The organization that was at the center of the maelstrom of the Iraqi weapons-of-mass-destruction fiasco, responsible for bringing the world to the brink of war on no fewer than a half-dozen occasions during the 1990s, and then unable to prevent a war in March 2003, has departed the global scene. It left not with a dramatic flair befitting its former status, but rather with barely a whimper, reduced to nothing more than a historical footnote in the grand tragedy that has become Iraq. Al Qaeda in Iraq: Bush's Creation posted by Bill Gallagher via rialator, 2007-07-02 19:09:44 President George W. Bush's political capital is about as low as it can go, with only dead-end Bushists clinging to his failed regime. The erosion of support, however, can actually make the madman even more isolated from reality, arrogant and impetuous. (full story) peace/war / international
A Matter of Justice or the Failure of Nations posted by nano, 2007-07-02 11:44:41 Press secretary for the Bush Whitehouse, Tony Snow, stated that Bush “has the ability to exercise his ‘own authority’ ..,” [my emphasis]. The comment was made in reference to a dispute in Congress and to presidential discretionary powers; however, what everybody is at pains to avoid is the nature of this “authority” in the US political system. Yes, the authority that is invested in the president is invested by the people through the democratic process; a president then becomes the representative voice of the people; and all things being equal – which they clearly are not – democracy continues in a healthy State! And therein lies the tale; the sickest democracy in the world today is the American ‘democracy.’ (full story and 1 comments) social/political / international
Criminal Empire: we own the Law posted by ninemsn via yarra, 2007-07-02 09:04:46 [Few would be surprised by the latest news of Bush commuting Libby's sentence. But it does serve to remind the American people what a bunch of submissive shit eaters they really are. What a perfect travesty! Ed.] (full story and 1 comments) imperialism / international
The K.I.S.S. Principle posted by Kismo, 2007-06-30 15:25:38 For those not familiar with the acronym ‘KISS’, it expands to, “Keep It Simple Stupid”! The KISS (K) principle was/is the most invaluable teaching/training aid in the IT industry, especially in the early days when people actually feared the ‘complexity’ of computers. Anyone who is confronted by an overwhelming amount of ‘information’ tends to lose themselves in a sea of confusion. Fortunately, a very bright and creative mind developed the ‘K’ principle for dealing with these situations. (full story) social/political / international
The rise and rise of Hamas posted by Stephen Zunes, 2007-06-30 01:25:26 Beginning in the early 1980s, with generous funding from the US-backed family dictatorship in Saudi Arabia, the antecedents of Hamas began to emerge through the establishment of schools, health care clinics, social service organizations and other entities which stressed an ultra-conservative interpretation of Islam, which up to that point had not been very common among the Palestinian population. Cults of Unreason and the End of Species posted by dreamboat, 2007-06-29 12:44:23 People today seem perplexed as civilisation as we know it plummets into the abyss. Yet, in the broad sense, the future is entirely predictable. The much lauded system of economic rationalism has resulted in huge disparities in wealth comparable to ancient societies; the wealth of Pharaoh-God-Kings of the past was staggering and in stark contrast to the wealth of their subjects. The peoples’ living standards were maintained at ‘adequate‘ levels to ensure a fit work/slave force for their rulers – remind you of anything, are you able to draw any comparisons today? In fact ancient Egypt (utilising modern poverty statistics) would have fared better in the social sense than most of today’s societies. So much for economic rationalism and laissez-faire capitalism! The inequity of today’s economic reality is far from mysterious; however, one mystery remains, the masses of today tolerate far greater inequities than the masses of yesterday. Subpoenas Sent to White House on Wiretapping posted by James Risen via rialator, 2007-06-27 11:27:28 WASHINGTON, June 27 — The Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday issued subpoenas to the White House, Vice President Dick Cheney’s office and the Justice Department after what the panel’s chairman called “stonewalling of the worst kind” of efforts to investigate the National Security Agency’s policy of wiretapping without warrants. The Empire of Clowns ... posted by Arthur Silber via reed, 2007-06-26 12:03:54 At this moment in the monstrously bloody course of American Empire, I suppose I might take the sardonically grateful point of view. At least we now have some direct experience of how easy it was for nauseatingly corrupt Roman leaders to impose their will upon the ignorant hordes, and literally to get away with murder. Hell, who needed to "get away" with murder? Bloody, painful, lingering, ungraspably sadistic murder was one of the major entertainments. (full story) social/political / international
Murdoch’s Dealings in China: It’s Business, and It’s Personal posted by Joseph Kahn via rialator, 2007-06-25 13:38:02 BEIJING, June 25 — Many big companies have sought to break into the Chinese market over the past two decades, but few of them have been as ardent and unrelenting as Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation.
Mr. Murdoch has flattered Communist Party leaders and done business with their children. His Fox News network helped China’s leading state broadcaster develop a news Web site. He joined hands with the Communist Youth League, a power base in the ruling party, in a risky television venture, his China managers and advisers say. (full story) mass media / international
Building a Justification for Waging War on Iran? posted by Prof. Michel Chossudovsky via rialator, 2007-06-24 11:00:03 "Another [9/11 type terrorist] attack could create both a justification and an opportunity that is lacking today to retaliate against some known targets" (Statement by Pentagon official, leaked to the Washington Post, 23 April 2006) (full story) imperialism / international
Neo-cons Spinning Hearts and Minds posted by Khody Akhavi via rialator, 2007-06-24 10:26:19 WASHINGTON, Jun 24 (IPS) - As the George W. Bush administration struggles through its last two years in office, it appears that the agenda of neoconservative ideologues has finally lost its appeal among strategic parts of the U.S. foreign policy apparatus. Mind Slaves of Our Time posted by fish, 2007-06-23 13:08:28 The title suggests the sci-fi genre or the paranoid delusions of conspiracy theorists; surely it couldn’t be possible that millions of people today are slaves to particular worldviews formulated by men in the distant past. Views that enslave, terrorise and create a subservient population. Intolerant views that challenge refutation with physical and psychological violence. Preposterous views that cripple the reasoning faculties and the intellect -- men flying and living inside whales, materialisations, stories relating to sociopathic, blood lusting, faecal-eating Gods.
Prior to the last reference most would have already guessed religion as the most likely pathogen responsible for most of today’s social ills. (full story and 1 comments) social equality/unity / international
The CIA and Fatah posted by Mike Whitney via rialator, 2007-06-21 10:20:48 "When Hamas gunmen stormed the Fatah security compounds in Gaza last week they found huge supplies of American-made weaponry including 7,400 M-16 assault rifles, dozens of mounted machine guns, rocket launchers, 7 armored military jeeps, 800,000 rounds of bullets and 18 US-made armored personnel carriers. They also discovered something far more valuable--- CIA files which purportedly contain "information about the collaboration between Fatah and the Israeli and American security organizations; CIA methods on how to prevent attacks, chase and follow after cells of Hamas and the Committees; plans about Fatah assassinations of members of Hamas and other organizations; and American studies on the security situation in Gaza." Political Genius: credit where it’s due posted by finch, 2007-06-19 20:36:59 Few even know her name but she was responsible for the Roman Empire enduring for another fifteen hundred years as a theological empire. Most people and historical texts mistakenly refer to the Roman Emperor Constantine as the person who transformed the militaristic Roman Empire into the Holy Roman Empire, however, he was only a manipulated mommy’s boy.
