Chris Hedges gave this keynote address on Wednesday, May 28, in Furman University’s Younts Conference Center.
When it was announced in May that President Bush would deliver the commencement address, 222 students and faculty signed and posted on the school’s Web site a statement titled “We Object.” The statement cites the war in Iraq and the administration’s “obstructing progress on reducing greenhouse gases while favoring billions in tax breaks and subsidies to oil companies that are earning record profits.”
“We are ashamed of the actions of this administration. The war in Iraq has cost the lives of over 4,000 brave and honorable U.S. military personnel,” the statement read. “Because we love this country and the ideals it stands for, we accept our civic responsibility to speak out against these actions that violate American values.” (full story)

NEW DELHI: The tale of massive fraud and embezzlement of millions of dollars by the US military in its operations in Iraq continues. Testifying before the US Congress Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on 22 May, Mary Ugone, deputy inspector general of accounts in the Pentagon said that an audit of $8.2 billion spending related to the Iraq war showed that $7.8 billion had been improperly spent. WHEN the Austro-Hungarian empire declared war on Serbia in July 1914, few could have imagined that the result would be the demise not only of the Habsburg empire, but also of the Russian and Ottoman ones. Nobody believes that Serbia's challenge to the European Union over Kosovo will be anything like as dramatic; most Serbs want to join the EU, not destroy it. Yet 100 days after Kosovo declared independence, Serbia has done a lot better than anybody expected in thwarting the EU's plans for it. (full story)

Some see the new organization, Unasur, as a regional version of the European Union. First we went after nonexistent nuclear weapons in Iraq; now we are consumed with the possibility that Iran might develop nuclear weapons in the future. Hillary Clinton declared she would obliterate Iran if it launched a nuclear strike on Israel -- nothwithstanding it LACKS that capability! But what nobody wants to talk about is the fact that Israel has had a secret nuclear weapons program for more than 30 years and has produced well over 200 nuclear bombs! (full story)

When our previous colonial overlord, Britain, required a site to test its nuclear weapons, Australia was chosen; the then conservative Australian government was only too happy to accommodate England and poison/irradiate South Australia. That, at least, was the claim of our president in justifying one of the most egregious assaults ever on this nation’s commitment to the rule of law. But now comes news that charges have been dropped against the so-called Sept. 11 attacks’ 20th hijacker, one of dozens so identified, because the “evidence” he supplied under torture and later recanted is not credible enough to go to trial. The most strategically vital region in Europe has always been the Balkans -- even more so today for energy reasons. Often unstated but undeniable, the most powerful and enduring Balkan nation is Serbia! The world is about to get a taste of the indomitable Serbian spirit once again. The monumental mistake the West/America made in the region was to target Serbia as an enemy and install organised Muslim criminals as an (illegitimate) government in Kosovo.
All attempts to illegally appropriate Kosovo are doomed to fail; the elimination of all Serbia and its people must necessarily precede the theft of Kosovo! If it’s war you want, then it’s war you will get!
Remove all foreign occupation forces from the Serbian province of Kosovo, including all occupying military bases or we will remove them from OUR territories – who do you think you’re fucking with? We have fought fascist forces on numerous occasions and prevailed and we will prevail again! How dare you attempt to steal our sacred Kosovo!

Nis, Serbia; and Zubin Potok, Kosovo - The Serbian Radical Party's election rally in the main square of the southern town of Nis seemed, at first glance, like any other campaign event. Popular music played over the PA system. Badges and hats were sold from makeshift stalls, and families with children listened to the speakers. (full story)
