The Corporate State and the Subversion of Democracy posted by Chris Hedges via rialator, 2008-05-31 21:07:57
Chris Hedges gave this keynote address on Wednesday, May 28, in Furman University’s Younts Conference Center.

When it was announced in May that President Bush would deliver the commencement address, 222 students and faculty signed and posted on the school’s Web site a statement titled “We Object.” The statement cites the war in Iraq and the administration’s “obstructing progress on reducing greenhouse gases while favoring billions in tax breaks and subsidies to oil companies that are earning record profits.”

“We are ashamed of the actions of this administration. The war in Iraq has cost the lives of over 4,000 brave and honorable U.S. military personnel,” the statement read. “Because we love this country and the ideals it stands for, we accept our civic responsibility to speak out against these actions that violate American values.” (full story)

European Union runs into roadblocks in its plans for Kosovo posted by Economist via reed, 2008-05-30 09:07:41
WHEN the Austro-Hungarian empire declared war on Serbia in July 1914, few could have imagined that the result would be the demise not only of the Habsburg empire, but also of the Russian and Ottoman ones. Nobody believes that Serbia's challenge to the European Union over Kosovo will be anything like as dramatic; most Serbs want to join the EU, not destroy it. Yet 100 days after Kosovo declared independence, Serbia has done a lot better than anybody expected in thwarting the EU's plans for it. (full story)

South America creates regional union, parliament, despite divisions posted by Marco Sibaja via reed, 2008-05-24 00:16:33
BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) - A new South American union was born Friday as leaders of the region's 12 nations set out to create a continental parliament. Some see the new organization, Unasur, as a regional version of the European Union. Summit host Brazil wants it to help coordinate defense affairs across South America and Venezuela's Hugo Chavez calls it a counterweight to the United States. (full story)

George W Bush Authorized 9/11 Attacks Says Government Insider posted by Alex Jones, 2008-05-23 09:14:36
Keep in mind when reading this, that the man being interviewed is no two-bit internet conspiracy buff.

Stanley Hilton was a senior advisor to Sen Bob Dole (R) and has personally known Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz for decades. This courageous man has risked his professional reputation, and possibly his life, to get this information out to people.

The following is from his latest visit to Alex Jones' radio show.

Note: All honor to Stanley Hilton for risking his life so that we may know the truth of 9/11.

The Bush Junta Unmasked

"This (9/11) was all planned. This was a government-ordered operation. Bush personally signed the order. He personally authorized the attacks. He is guilty of treason and mass murder." --Stanley Hilton (full story)

For His Treatment of Children in the ‘War on Terror,’ Bush Is a War Criminal posted by Dave Lindorff via reed, 2008-05-23 08:36:24
Surely nothing that President Bush has done in his two wretched terms of office — not the invasion and destruction of Iraq, not the overturning of the five-centuries-old tradition of habeas corpus, not his authorization and encouragement of torture, not his campaign of domestic spying — nothing, can compare in its ugliness as his approval, as commander in chief, of the imprisoning of over 2500 children. A Two-State Solution for the United States and Israel posted by David Bromwich via reed, 2008-05-18 22:26:00
We are slowly leaving the Bush presidency. Can we leave it fast enough for the safety of the world? George W. Bush thought it would be a good idea to help Israel celebrate its 60th birthday. So he showed up to celebrate, in spite of the gross contradiction his presence there offered against an appearance of impartiality in the negotiations between Israel and Palestine -- an accord whose success the president has said he intends to show as the diplomatic legacy of eight years in office. Israel must be held to same nuclear scrutiny as Iran posted by Joe Parko via reed, 2008-05-18 21:58:39
First we went after nonexistent nuclear weapons in Iraq; now we are consumed with the possibility that Iran might develop nuclear weapons in the future. Hillary Clinton declared she would obliterate Iran if it launched a nuclear strike on Israel -- nothwithstanding it LACKS that capability! But what nobody wants to talk about is the fact that Israel has had a secret nuclear weapons program for more than 30 years and has produced well over 200 nuclear bombs! (full story)

Celebration of a spineless Nation posted by finch, 2008-05-18 10:28:49
When our previous colonial overlord, Britain, required a site to test its nuclear weapons, Australia was chosen; the then conservative Australian government was only too happy to accommodate England and poison/irradiate South Australia. Scant regard was given to our service personnel and the local Aborigines, as the many resulting deaths from cancer testify. (full story and 1 comments)

The Tortured Law on Torture posted by Robert Scheer via reed, 2008-05-14 07:19:32
Ah yes, those torture confessions have proved so useful. That, at least, was the claim of our president in justifying one of the most egregious assaults ever on this nation’s commitment to the rule of law. But now comes news that charges have been dropped against the so-called Sept. 11 attacks’ 20th hijacker, one of dozens so identified, because the “evidence” he supplied under torture and later recanted is not credible enough to go to trial. Bush Tour Diminished by Hezbollah Show of Force posted by Jim Lobe via rialator, 2008-05-14 07:06:22
WASHINGTON, May 12 (IPS) - While this week's trip by President George W. Bush to Israel, Saudi Arabia and Egypt was never conceived as a triumphant "victory lap" around the region, the swift rout of U.S.-backed forces by Lebanon's Hezbollah Friday has provided yet another vivid illustration of the rapid decline in Washington's influence in the Middle East during his tenure. Rallying Serbs from The Hague posted by Christine Spolar -- intro 'dragan', 2008-05-10 21:59:10
The most strategically vital region in Europe has always been the Balkans -- even more so today for energy reasons. Often unstated but undeniable, the most powerful and enduring Balkan nation is Serbia! The world is about to get a taste of the indomitable Serbian spirit once again. The monumental mistake the West/America made in the region was to target Serbia as an enemy and install organised Muslim criminals as an (illegitimate) government in Kosovo.

All attempts to illegally appropriate Kosovo are doomed to fail; the elimination of all Serbia and its people must necessarily precede the theft of Kosovo! If it’s war you want, then it’s war you will get!

Remove all foreign occupation forces from the Serbian province of Kosovo, including all occupying military bases or we will remove them from OUR territories – who do you think you’re fucking with? We have fought fascist forces on numerous occasions and prevailed and we will prevail again! How dare you attempt to steal our sacred Kosovo!

Serbs vote Sunday -- national identity or dissolution posted by Andrew Wander via druze, 2008-05-10 09:22:02
Nis, Serbia; and Zubin Potok, Kosovo - The Serbian Radical Party's election rally in the main square of the southern town of Nis seemed, at first glance, like any other campaign event. Popular music played over the PA system. Badges and hats were sold from makeshift stalls, and families with children listened to the speakers. (full story)
