Loan defaults escalating: Big Finance and governments Responsible posted by finch, 2007-06-28 14:24:51 Many articles have been written on the tactic of pervasive and continuous debt as a form of economic social management. However, few financial ‘wizards’ and politicians understood the ramifications of such a tactic. To meet regular needs average people have been forced to borrow at rates never before seen. As a result of the created necessity to borrow large amounts and the ease of obtaining large loans, a rapid increase in loan defaults is occurring. Perhaps statistical information on the ‘spike’ in long term debt servicing and mortgagee defaults highlights the failure of the debt strategy. Hailed at the time as the optimum method of economic and social management, today it is proving to be just another strategy of big business appropriating more at the expense of EVERYTHING and everyone else. Stealing the Debate and Setting the Agenda posted by nano, 2007-06-27 19:15:59 In Oz politics, stealing the agenda and debate is worth a ton of policies. The local media has trained itself to follow -- with scant regard for actual value -- the most controversial (sensational) political stunts. For the politician who is able to feed the media shark with the tastiest dish, the national political consciousness becomes theirs to exploit to full advantage. Servile Howard government posted by dingo, 2007-06-25 19:42:28 The following story from AAP would just be another internet related sex case but for the fact the U.S. is 'requesting' the American sex offender (facing paedophilia charges) be handed over to THEM to be tried by a Military Commission! And the Band Played On .. posted by peptide, 2007-06-22 14:46:51 The title refers to the band on the ‘Titanic’ playing while the ship sank beneath the icy waters. Metaphor or allegory for the assault on free speech and democracy, judge for yourself but don’t forget to remain passive, servile and fearful in the face of all assaults on hard won freedoms and civil liberties – liberties your fathers died in wars to protect! The Cynical politics of John Howard posted by major mitchell, 2007-06-20 22:31:15 This week witnessed John Howard’s cynical politics plumb new depths.
It is no secret that the larger percentage of income responsible for the economic boom Australia is experiencing issues from the resource/mining sector; and it is also no secret that the greatest impediment to open slather corporate exploitation of the land are the rights exercised by indigenous communities over their land. Unravelling posted by gan, 2007-06-18 22:19:57 As the wall approaches, or rather as we speed recklessly toward it, it serves no purpose to analyse how a nation, trillions of dollars in debt, remains in a position to offer billions to its enemies and try and buy its way out of inevitable collapse. The buy-off strategy is not new, what is new however is that the offers have been rejected – no amount of money could buy Kosovo from Serbia, what are a people without a heart or national identity? Condi Rice, with Israel’s whole-hearted support, today openly offered to buy-off Palestinians in the vain hope that western influence could be maintained in the region. For numerous reasons this strategy will also fail. (full story and 1 comments) imperialism / international
Infiltration and Inefficiencies in State Regulatory Agencies posted by dingo, 2007-06-17 14:44:50 [The following story relates to ALL western regulatory agencies regardless of this local example.]
The fact that no one really knows anyone allows for an extremely broad scope of activity in all agency environments especially in circumstances where ethnic personnel are required. Few people forfeit their original cultural allegiances for the agencies’ or their adopted nation’s – this applies to numerous generations born (but victimised and discriminated against) in their adopted countries. Australian racism has made it particularly difficult to recruit patriotic personnel from ethnic backgrounds. (full story and 1 comments) injustice/law / national
Oil interests flout International Law in Balkans posted by fish, 2007-06-10 14:42:17 Republican president Bush follows Democrat president Clinton’s course in the Balkans; oil pipelines and gas supplies take precedence over every other consideration including international law and the sanctity of human life. Bush has challenged Russia, Serbia and International Law by announcing during his recent visit to Albania that Kosovo, a Serbian province, would become independent in the near future, negotiations must result in “certain independence ... that’s what’s important to know”, he said! Bush’s grammatically woeful statements beg the question, why the need for negotiation if the Texan president insists that independence is “certain” for Kosovo -- which remains Serbian sovereign territory? Foreign debt - Australia's black hole posted by flake gordon, 2007-06-06 12:39:44 An economic fact that everyone understands is crushing debt, personal or national. Think twice before you swallow the double talk and gobbly-gook of the conservative Howard government. Good management means high production, minimal debt, and low personal tax rates. Compare economic facts with the nonsense that issues from the mouth of the Federal Treasurer. (full story) social/political / national
The Hypocrisy of Religion: Catholic Cardinal threatens State Politicians posted by Kingfisher, 2007-06-05 15:25:24 SYDNEY -- A comment by Catholic Archbishop George Pell directed at Catholic Premier, Morris Iemma and other Catholic politicians, is clearly an attempt by the church to interfere with matters of State. Is this a case of an insular Cardinal pining for the good ol’ days when the Holy Roman Empire ruled Europe with a corrupt iron cross or is it a case of blatant religious hypocrisy? Perhaps the Cardinal’s comments relating to stem cell issues constitute a clear case of criminal blackmail – legal advocates may find a prime target in Cardinal Pell. A legal action could be interpreted as the State clearly delineating a distinction between matters of church and matters of State – Cardinals may discover they can’t have their cake and eat it with impunity! Balibo, 32 years of Australian Cowardice posted by peptide, 2007-05-29 22:00:47 The infamous Balibo murders perfectly illustrate Australian cowardice and Indonesian barbarity. It should be stated from the outset that the truth of the cold-blooded murder of the Balibo five has been known since the day of the crime in 1975. The cringing attitude displayed by successive Australian governments toward the barbaric Indonesians has made Australia a laughing stock in Asia. All successive Labor and Liberal governments that perpetuated the lie of a tragic accident (caught in a cross-fire) are guilty of criminal suppression of the truth and criminal collusion with the murderers -- grubby oil deals notwithstanding. Whale slaughter in Southern Oceans posted by moby, 2007-05-28 09:08:25 Why is a Northern Hemisphere nation, JAPAN, permitted to flagrantly slaughter whales in Southern Hemisphere waters? Perhaps widespread inaction in the face of blatant Japanese smugness, arrogance, contempt for the environment, the International Whaling Commission and other nations is related to the world’s toleration of criminal wars resulting in hundreds of thousands of innocent human casualties! What chance do whales have if innocent HUMAN BEINGS are treated as expendable? (full story) social/political / international
Bush pre-empts Al-Sadr’s Return posted by barra, 2007-05-25 11:56:48 Shia leader Muqtada al-Sadr re-appears just two days after Bush’s statement to the American media that next month (we assume June) will be a critical period in the ongoing travesty that is the Iraq occupation. Bush may have finally received some accurate information regarding al-Sadr’s plans to unite with Sunni leaders and hopefully form a unified and powerful front against invading and occupying forces. Holocaust Iraq: An inconvenient Truth posted by fish, 2007-05-21 22:55:16 Today, the American public is no longer able to claim ignorance over the real cost of filling their SUVs with gas nor are they able to deny their status as a hypocritical, ungodly, pariah nation. Few people anywhere are unaware of America’s dirty little grab for the resources of weaker nations. For every full tank of gas INNOCENT human blood has been spilt, particularly the blood of those least able to defend themselves, CHILDREN. When faced with undeniable and unpleasant realities Americans seek refuge in the unreality of their televisions or other distracting entertainments. The cost of the American lifestyle today is served to local populations for breakfast, however, the media is careful to neatly package all distasteful material in justifications, propaganda and flagrant lies (that have no currency anywhere but America).
