Apology of a Nation posted by peptide, 2008-02-12 07:30:15 The long overdue admission of wrongs perpetrated against Australia’s indigenous people was finally acknowledged today in the form of a national apology delivered to the Aboriginal people by the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd. The RACIST, criminal and socially sick conservative ideology that resulted in thousands of Aboriginal children being forcibly removed from their mothers’ arms has been clearly condemned today by a national act of contrition. History notes the glaring absence of the former conservative, RACIST, Prime Minister, John Howard, from today's ceremony! Let it be a very cold day in hell before Australians entertain the poisonous, conservative ideology again! (full story and 3 comments) social/political / national
Anachronistic Nation posted by barra, 2008-02-11 07:03:40 Today the 42nd Australian parliament opened for business; it was notable for its antiquated ceremonial -- not a lot of change since the first colonial parliament in the penal colonies of Australia. (full story) social/political / national
Timor-Leste: a broader view required posted by dingo, 2008-02-10 20:39:41 Labor PM, Kevin Rudd has announced his support for Morris Iemma’s huge energy infrastructure sell-off in NSW, a move that threatens huge job losses, quality control standards and price rises for services. But why should Rudd care, it was Rudd who stated that politics in today’s Australia is no longer a matter of ideology? Facility and expedition are the order of the day – but for whom? Big business does not place governments in power to have their interests thwarted, so it's full steam ahead for vested interests and a final goodbye to the last vestiges of the ALP as a people's party – rest in peace the once proud Labor movement of Australia! Kosovo: illegal independence but at what price? posted by goran, 2008-02-10 10:29:47 What price is the US and NATO willing to pay for supporting a flagrantly illegal secession in the Balkans? No one knows exactly but it‘s sure to be higher than anyone anticipated! Only the moronic Americans would support such an inflammatory move in this extremely volatile region – oil and gas pipelines notwithstanding. (full story) imperialism / international
The ‘Timor Rift’ widens posted by luis, 2008-02-10 09:55:18 Disgruntled freedom fighters led by Major Alfredo Reinado have attacked the symbolic head of Timor-Leste’s puppet government today. Turncoat president, Jose Ramos-Horta was shot twice during the attack, however, accurate reports of his condition are not available at this stage, though his condition is said to be critical. Puppet Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao has ‘assured’ western media the situation is ‘stable’ in view of the fact he was also targeted and attacked by freedom fighters! A bit less propaganda and a little more realistic, accurate reporting please! (full story) imperialism / international
American Imperialism and the Symbiotic Narco Trade posted by nano, 2008-02-09 08:10:31 A recent report alerting to the appearance of commercial quantities Afghan brown heroin in the far-away (from source) location of Adelaide, Australia, may indirectly assist American militarists and politicians understand why it is that NATO is reluctant to support the U.S. in further calamitous misadventures in the Middle East, Central Asia or anywhere else. It seems the world is no longer enamoured with the violent, brutish, simplistic, naive and INCOMPETENT leadership of the USA – Robert Gates, take note! Extreme Asymmetry posted by quill, 2008-02-08 10:16:16 It never fails to fill me with awe how a group of dedicated specialists armed with nothing more than $20 keyboards are able to tip the balance on the most powerful nations in the world. (full story) social/political / international
Contrasting celebs: humanitarian Jolie vs white trash Hilton posted by talya, 2008-02-08 09:28:31 Celebrity is its own worst enemy; however, Angelina Jolie may be redefining modern celebrity in her new role as UN ‘goodwill ambassador’ to Iraq! (full story) human rights / international
Former racist Oz leader refuses to attend Indigenous Reconciliation Ceremony posted by finch, 2008-02-08 07:54:17 Former PM, racist and war criminal John Howard has declined an invitation to attend a reconciliation ceremony designed to address past injustices suffered by the indigenous population of Australia. Howard’s miserable gesture is true to form. Perhaps now investigations into Howard’s involvement in Iraqi war crimes and crimes against humanity should proceed at speed. Australian Banks practise Financial Coercion via Penalties and Fees posted by krill, 2008-02-07 11:06:14 In an environment of deregulated, free market capitalism you can’t scream laissez-faire and implement constraining, draconian financial policies on the public, which is exactly what deregulated Australian Banks and other local Financial Institutions are doing! Torture ‘logic’ USA posted by gan, 2008-02-06 08:05:28 This short piece is principally directed at Americans, as most people of the free world – approx. 99.99% of the planet’s population, understand torture as TORTURE! Torture remains illegal under international law but America has flouted international law and convention on so many occasions it is no surprise it attempts to justify the use of TORTURE today. TORTURE! posted by reed, 2008-02-05 10:47:49 The CIA finally admits utilising torture on "three" separate occasions, give us a break! ‘Waterboarding,’ a euphemism for administered slow drowning, is not new to the USA. We can safely add at least two zeros to that hysterically absurd CIA figure. American Nazi torturers may have finally learnt what any good book on the subject or an interview with torture victims would have revealed -- ‘information extracted under torture conforms to the torturer's wishes!’ Accuracy has little bearing on information torturers wish to hear – though it is common for torturers to confuse wish-fulfilment with accuracy! THEY make mistakes WE feel the “pain!” posted by barra, 2008-02-04 18:32:47 “This one will really hurt,” announced the new (inept) Australian PM, referring to the latest Reserve Bank interest rate hike of a quarter of one percent. However, he forgot to qualify his comment – hurt YOU he should have added, because it certainly doesn’t hurt him, other politicians or especially the Bank executives who created the problem in the first instance! Israel faces future annihilation as Bush delivers ultimatum to Gulf States posted by Mike Whitney via rialator, 2008-02-04 09:19:11 Mike Whitney’s articles are always insightful and entertaining though some titles could do with a little modification. We are always happy for his work to be included in our “other press” section; however, his latest effort begs additional analysis. We would be pleased if he or others familiar with the subject would contribute additional information and pursue their analysis and deductions to logical conclusions.
An obvious question is why should Gulf States compromise their own economies and acquiesce to Bush’s ultimatum if Russian Naval and Air Power in the region are poised for action? Neither Israel nor the USA is in a position to declare war on the entire region. Any such action would inevitably involve Russia and China – so let’s hear it from the informed experts! Ed.
