Lost in Translation posted by dingo, 2007-01-25 18:12:08 ‘Never look at what they want you to see, look at why they want you to see it’! This East European adage is attributed to the Gypsies but its real origin is lost in the sea of ethnic diversity that is Eastern Europe. My initial exposure to this European gem of wisdom was while watching a news report on TV with friends; one of the group rightly asked what had happened to Bush’s highly prized ‘democracy’ in his own nation where over seventy percent of the population rejects him and his incompetent regime? BUSH AND THE PUBLIC SEEM TO HAVE FORGOTTEN THAT DEMOCRACY IS REPRESENTATIVE GOVERNMENT AND BUSH (with only 28% approval rating) IS NO LONGER REPRESENTATIVE! (full story) imperialism / international
Solutions, Remedies and Cultural Amnesia posted by jalal'udin, 2006-10-04 18:56:32 Would someone care to guess the historical age of the well-known adage, “A HOUSE DIVIDED CANNOT STAND” notwithstanding this particular quote is sourced from theological material? Regardless of age or source the above maxim expresses a universal truth in relation to social affairs. Recent history reminds us of the fragmentation and demise of a once independent Balkan nation. Yugoslavia now hosts the largest military occupation base (Bondsteel) in Europe. The Balkan conflict is a perfect example of divisionism leading to ruin – as it always does! [In contrast, fragmented warlord-torn China overcame its long history of internal conflict to become one of the most powerful nations on the planet.] (full story and 1 comments) imperialism / international
Suicide Bomber posted by leef, 2006-09-24 16:59:27 Perhaps the two most feared words in the English language today are “suicide bomber”; the propaganda machine in the west ensures that these two words continue to strike fear and terror into the hearts of the civilian population. Circumstances occasionally present all of us with unusual opportunities. When a young man who claimed the above distinction wished to make known his story it would have been a dereliction of my profession to refuse the request. The public interest is not served unless both sides of a story are made available. (full story and 1 comments) imperialism / national
The Qana Massacre And The Risks Of Relying On Israeli Propaganda posted by Minerva's Owl, 2006-08-01 23:50:08 Relying on Israeli propaganda can often lead to embarrassment, as CNN's Paula Zahn recently discovered. Read on to find out how she was used by the Israeli Defense Force. (full story and 1 comments) imperialism / international
Timor-Leste (Update) posted by peptide, 2006-06-01 14:55:26 America has been steadily reducing its active presence in the South Pacific over the past decade. Australia (the deputy sheriff) is expected to ‘step up to the plate’ and safeguard western interests in that region. Timor is the first test of deputy (dog) in the region and to date the deputy appears to be weakening at the knees. (full story and 2 comments) imperialism / international
Reeking in Timor posted by nano, 2006-05-28 07:21:09 Did I hear that word again (communist)? The comment/accusation was directed at the Timorese Prime Minister Alkatiri during an Oz ‘newscast’ – certainly puts an interesting slant on the Timor situation! I was reminded of the emerging independence of the Congo and the short life of its charismatic leader, Patrice Lumumba. The intervention of the CIA and the subsequent assassination of Patrice were entirely ‘coincidental’ events! (full story and 3 comments) imperialism / international
Conservative coalition enters Next Phase posted by peptide, 2006-05-19 16:33:52 In response to increased UN pressure to close the illegal Guantanamo Bay detention/torture centre, the Americans left no doubt, “we have no intention of closing Guantanamo Bay”. The flagrant illegality of Guantanamo Bay is lost on the Americans, or worse, stands as a defiant monument to American belligerence and unilateralism. The rest of the world can go to hell; Americans do what they want when they want, is that clear? (full story) imperialism / international
Anachronism visits Australia posted by finch, 2006-03-12 02:45:29 Two high profile women visit Oz, an anachronism and a modern evolutionary equivalent, the Queen of England, Lizzy, and the US Secretary of State, Condy. The Australian cringe faces the focus of its pathological fears of independence. India, Pakistan and numerous tiny island ex-colonial nations have become independent but to Australia’s great shame it is yet unable to assert its full independence. Instead it has played its psychosis like an octave and transposed its complex to daddy America – chunder! (full story and 2 comments) imperialism / national
Liberation of hostage Douglas Wood posted by plait, 2005-06-23 23:10:39 [We would like to extend our gratitude to those who were directly involved in the release and rescue of Douglas Wood.]
The context of this event is the criminal US invasion and occupation of Iraq and the subsequent opposition to this invasion by the Arab Resistance. To state that this invasion is not going well would be the understatement of the twenty first century. The invading forces are faced with a (growing) concerted and effective resistance, not an unusual or unexpected response in the circumstances. (full story) imperialism / international
Patterns posted by cleaves, 2005-01-19 11:28:45 Recent events involving the actions of certain nations have highlighted a pattern that most freedom loving people would find extremely disturbing. Is it possible, in the absence of a strategic balance of power in the world, that some nations with the means and opportunity would attempt to impose their will and value systems on other nations? Update (Iraq) posted by cleaves, 2005-01-16 09:49:18 At present, the whole world stands in "shock and awe" of the ineptitude of the US military and the whole debacle that is the Iraq intervention. Every military cadet is taught the strategies of all the great military battles of history. Napoleon, who brought the greatest ‘military machine’ (of the period) to bear on Russia was defeated by an enemy that would not capitulate – an enemy that deployed guerilla tactics and drew the world’s most powerful army into a quagmire (from which it could not recover.) The imperialism of Bonaparte was crushed soon after. (full story) imperialism / international
