A $516 trillion derivatives 'time-bomb' posted by Margareta Pagano and Simon Evans via krill, 2008-10-12 08:40:35 The market is worth more than $516 trillion, (£303 trillion), roughly 10 times the value of the entire world's output: it's been called the "ticking time-bomb". It's a market in which the lead protagonists – typically aggressive, highly educated, and now wealthy young men – have flourished in the derivatives boom. But it's a market that is set to come to a crashing halt – the Great Unwind has begun. (full story and 1 comments) social/political / international
'See how they run,' house of (derivative) cards ready to collapse! posted by nano, 2008-10-10 04:46:57 From the absolute theocratic rule of Pharaohs through Rome’s military elites to the economic theorists of the modern era (Marx/Friedman) the failure of social groups and societies has less to do with flawed models than with ‘human frailty!’ Call it what you will but I prefer calling a spade a spade -- pig selfishness, greed and no regard for the less fortunate other. Market mayhem: that Old Black Magic ‘bailout’ posted by yarra, 2008-10-06 20:21:04 The world’s leading, independent economists all stated it wouldn’t and couldn’t work -- what, the sheeple bleat? The very fast-tracked Paulson ‘bailout’ (for his fat cat mates!) But what of the poor sheeple screwed by rogues so perfectly? You were warned, COMPLACENCY comes at a PRICE, baa’aa! Quote of the Century posted by finch, 2008-10-05 11:26:28 In an attempt to smear his rival Barack Obama, John McCain referred to a flimsy connection between Obama and Bill Ayers, a founding member of the weather underground. McCain’s now infamous quote given in a television interview was mentioned in a NYT article this week (link below): “How can you countenance someone [Ayers] who was engaged in bombings that could have or did kill innocent people?” Good point, John! Betrayed by the Bailout: The Death of Democracy posted by William Cox via reed, 2008-10-04 23:21:44 On this date, October 3, 2008, the American people were betrayed by those whom they had elected to represent them. The members of Congress who voted for the Wall Street "bailout" violated their oath of office to "support and defend the Constitution" ... "that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same" ... "and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: ..." (full story and 1 comments) social/political / international
Common denominator: 9/11 and the Bush Doctrine posted by quill, 2008-10-04 22:52:10 Every branding, advertising and marketing trick in the book is employed by American neo-conservatives in their manic pursuit of world domination. Political destabilisation and promoting constant war are two well-known methods that Washington criminals employ. However, we should never forget that the first attack must necessarily be on language! (full story) social/political / international
Rudd: the most insignificant and internationally disregarded PM in Oz history posted by barra, 2008-10-03 23:29:41 After his revealing address to an almost empty chamber at the UN, Kevin ‘non-event’ Rudd has taken Australian recognition to an all-time low in the international arena.
His predecessor, John ‘aluminium tubing’ Howard could never be accused of insignificance, his rabid right wing, racist, contractive, slavish (to America) and cynical policies ensured that he would be noticed by the world, but for all the wrong reasons! The Tampa crisis, deportation of citizens, illegal invasive warfare, rabid racism, which culminated in the victimisation of dark skinned Indian Doctor Haneef, surrendering Australian nationals to Indonesian authorities to face execution and allowing Transnationals and Corporate CEOs to dictate policy in the running of the nation, especially Allan Moss and his Macquarie Group! Angela Merkel: no credible response to Medvedev posted by BBC staff report via rialator, 2008-10-03 04:19:40 German Chancellor, Agela ‘uber alles’ Merkel, responded to Russian President Medvedev’s pragmatism and realism with double standards and hypocrisy during talks in St Petersburg this week. Medvedev stated fact in relation to the demise of the USA as economic superpower and serious force in the region. Merkel, fully cognisant of the pipeline corridor/energy wars raging at present, responded with criticism of Russia’s actions in Georgia. She accused Russia of a “disproportionate” response to the unprovoked western-backed attack on innocent civilians in South Ossetia! Merkel may have been thinking of Germany’s clandestine role in the ILLEGAL secession of Kosovo when she added that Georgia's ‘territorial integrity’ "is non-negotiable!" The age of Puppet Government and Mindless Masses posted by krill, 2008-10-02 00:36:49 Events relating to the questionable competence and integrity of Bankers, Financiers, Corporate CEOs and the muted reaction of the American public this week are astounding to say the least. Only a few weeks ago President George ‘Milton’ Bush and Republican presidential candidate, John ‘bomb bomb’ McCain, were extolling the virtues of the American economy and the free market system; both men constantly repeated a mantra claiming the American economy is “fundamentally strong!” However, in a matter of DAYS the ‘strong’ economy SUDDENLY became the ‘dire crisis’ economy; it is now beyond any argument that our current batch of politicians are clueless -- what day is it, gentlemen? It seems ‘polly’ is required to parrot new lines for her cracker this week! (full story) social/political / international
US Congress rejects flawed bailout: think outside the 'box!' posted by nano, 2008-09-30 00:52:57 To say the market was surprised by the House’s rejection of the ‘bailout’ proposal on Monday would be putting it mildly; however, BIG Finance and BIG Banking were NOT surprised one bit! Even more surprising was the fact that Republicans (GOP) were largely responsible for the rejection of the Bill! You know them, ‘God is the free market!’ One could become a cynic overnight faced with such inversions and ideological backflips; however, a careful approach and focused eye reveals much. The end of Voodoo Economics posted by Ian Williams via reed, 2008-09-28 08:45:21 Wall Street ideologues have been gambling our money and screwing us all. Now is a chance to correct their excesses.
As the all-too-often selectively quoted Adam Smith actually said: "All for ourselves, and nothing for other people, seems, in every age of the world, to have been the vile maxim of the masters of mankind." (full story) social/political / international
Only in America posted by yarra, 2008-09-26 09:51:39 Recent events in the USA relating to the economic meltdown highlight the old cliché, ‘only in America’ … is the population so subservient, passive, afraid and compliant that it accepts flagrant corruption and racketeering from the financial, banking and business sectors. It is not enough that fat cats wreak havoc on the quality of (American) life -- the clueless, puppet government on orders from the ruling private sector expect the overburdened American public to shoulder the entire responsibility for bailing out the Robber Barons who have destroyed the economy. Sarah Palin brandishes ‘phallic trophy:’ the symbolism is not lost posted by budgie, 2008-09-23 02:41:01 Holding a giant tube of ‘lipstick’ aloft there is no stopping this gutsy, all-American gal who is winning the hearts and subliminal minds of the American people. At present she is unbeatable; the democrats have no answer for the ‘Palin push,’ none whatsoever -- though an answer surely exists! (full story) social/political / international
[Failed] Corporate State USA posted by Kingfisher, 2008-09-20 00:53:22 The past few decades have seen Corporate interests laying siege on western democracies and completely vanquishing the democratic process and representative government – Abe Lincoln’s government of the people by the people is finito! Today’s ‘democracies’ are government by the Corporations for the Corporations for the very privileged few! If you are beginning to feel uncomfortable, like a slave or chump all I can say is, “if the shoe fits ..!” (full story and 3 comments) social/political / international
Privatising the Pentagon posted by Frida Berrigan via rialator, 2008-09-19 09:42:16 Seven years into George W. Bush's Global War on Terror, the Pentagon is embroiled in two big wars, a potentially explosive war of words with Tehran, and numerous smaller conflicts – and it is leaning ever more heavily on private military contractors to get by.
Once upon a time, soldiers did more than pick up a gun. They picked up trash. They cut hair and delivered mail. They fixed airplanes and inflated truck tires. Not anymore. All of those tasks are now the responsibility of private military corporations. In the service of the Pentagon, their employees also man computers, write software code, create integrating systems, train technicians, manufacture and service high-tech weapons, market munitions, and interpret satellite images.
