How analysts in the Arab world see the Iraq war posted by Helena Cobban via rialator, 2007-03-28 13:13:06 LONDON -- Policymakers and strategic analysts in the Arab world have little confidence that current US troop surge in Iraq will do much more than – at best – postpone a complete political-security breakdown in Iraq, which, they fear, could then spread across the Middle East. During my lengthy recent discussions with experts in Egypt, Jordan, and Syria, and with some well-connected Iraqis in Jordan, I heard a lot about how Iraq's collapse has been affecting these Arab societies. Israel, U.S. hold large-scale joint missile defense exercise posted by IHT via rialator, 2007-03-18 09:58:13 Prepare for a major ‘incident’ from desperate conservative forces worldwide! The following article would be a routine report if not for U.S. war games and joint military exercises to be held in Australia in the next few weeks. The recent visit of deputy sheriff, John Howard, to Japan on behalf of his master, the USA, provides for Japan to take an active role in military affairs in the region. Howard signed a joint military assistance pact with Japan, which maintains a constitutional anti-war restriction on its military (at the moment).
Joint military exercises in strategic locations around the globe should alarm China, Russia and other nations. The Americans have no notion of subtlety so these exercises indicate more than just routine events. The rogue must be stopped! (full story) peace/war / international

Global Realignment and the Decline of the Superpower posted by Mike Whitney via rialator, 2007-03-09 07:00:50 The United States has been defeated in Iraq. That doesn’t mean that there’ll be a troop withdrawal anytime soon, but it does mean that there’s no chance of achieving the mission’s political objectives. Iraq will not be a democracy, reconstruction will be minimal, and the security situation will continue to deteriorate into the foreseeable future. (full story) imperialism / international
China Rejects US Human Rights Criticism posted by Daniel Schearf via rialator, 2007-03-08 06:48:14 China has rejected U.S. criticism of its human rights record, accusing Washington of hypocrisy for not addressing its own abuses. In a tit-for-tat response to the U.S. State Department's annual human rights report, China issued its own report accusing Washington of systematic abuses both abroad - in Iraq and Afghanistan - and at home. Daniel Schearf reports from Beijing. (full story and 2 comments) human rights / international
Australia: the new 51st state posted by John Pilger via rialator, 2007-03-02 19:02:30 John Howard's servility to the U.S. is even greater than Tony Blair's and has earned him the nickname Bush's deputy sheriff. The conspiracy between Washington, the media and politicians is eroding the country's freedoms. (full story) imperialism / national
Oklahoma bombing conspirator claim posted by Pamela Manson via rialator, 2007-03-01 08:07:41 Much is being made of laws instituted after the Oklahoma bombing and the Hicks prosecution. The American prosecutors of David Hicks and the Australian Attorney General, Philip Ruddock, have made reference to these laws in relation to the Hicks case.
The following article from The Salt Lake Tribune today throws new light on the original bombing. At the very least these claims need to be fully investigated, as the resulting additions to American Law are now instrumental in the prosecution of the Australian citizen, David Hicks. American Torture on Trial posted by Naomi Klein via rialator, 2007-02-26 21:07:07 February 26, 2007 -- Something remarkable is going on in a Miami courtroom. The cruel methods US interrogators have used since September 11 to "break" prisoners are finally being put on trial. This was not supposed to happen. The Bush Administration's plan was to put José Padilla on trial for allegedly being part of a network linked to international terrorists. But Padilla's lawyers are arguing that he is not fit to stand trial because he has been driven insane by the government. (full story) injustice/law / international
The US, the world's hedge fund posted by Max Fraad Wolff via rialator, 2007-02-26 11:00:51 There are some strange facts about the asset and trade positions of the US economy in the globalizing economy. The United States runs massive and growing trade deficits, is borrowing at a clip that would arouse the suspicions of a casino pit boss, and has been selling its assets to anyone who will buy. In the past 24 months, the US balance on goods and services comes in just shy of negative-$1.5 trillion. Across the same period, the US has sunk further into debt to the rest of the world. US funds terror groups to sow chaos in Iran posted by William Lowther and Colin Freeman via rialator, 2007-02-25 20:19:10 America is secretly funding militant ethnic separatist groups in Iran in an attempt to pile pressure on the Islamic regime to give up its nuclear programme.
In a move that reflects Washington's growing concern with the failure of diplomatic initiatives, CIA officials are understood to be helping opposition militias among the numerous ethnic minority groups clustered in Iran's border regions. (full story) imperialism / international
