Information Warfare, Psy-ops and the Power of Myth posted by Mike Whitney via rialator, 2007-02-16 12:24:10 The Pentagon’s bold new approach to psychological operations (psy-ops) appears to have derived from the theories of former State Dept official, Philip Zelikow (who also served on the 9-11 Commission) Zelikow is an expert on “the creation and maintenance of ‘public myths’ or ‘public presumptions’. His theory analyzes how consciousness is shaped by “searing events” which take on “transcendent importance” and, therefore, move the public in the direction chosen by the policymakers. For Neocons, an Attack on Iran Has Been a Six-Year Project posted by Larisa Alexandrovna via rialator, 2007-02-12 20:26:31 The escalation of US military planning on Iran is only the latest chess move in a six-year push within the Bush Administration to attack that country. While Iran was named a part of President George W. Bush's "axis of evil" in 2002, efforts to ignite a confrontation with Iran date back long before the post-9/11 war on terror. Former Guantanamo chaplain wants U.S. Army apology posted by Bernd Debusmann via rialator, 2007-02-06 20:12:38 WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Capt. James Yee spent 76 days in solitary confinement, much of the time shackled and in leg irons, after accusations of sedition, espionage and aiding the enemy while serving as a Muslim chaplain at Guantanamo Bay.
The Army's case against him collapsed at trial, and it eventually wiped his record clean and gave the West Point graduate an honorable discharge. (full story and 1 comments) injustice/law / international
Iran: The War Begins posted by John Pilger via rialator, 2007-02-02 19:45:54 As opposition grows in America to the failed Iraq adventure, the Bush administration is preparing public opinion for an attack on Iran, its latest target, by the spring.
The United States is planning what will be a catastrophic attack on Iran. For the Bush cabal, the attack will be a way of "buying time" for its disaster in Iraq. In announcing what he called a "surge" of American troops in Iraq, George W Bush identified Iran as his real target. "We will interrupt the flow of support [to the insurgency in Iraq] from Iran and Syria," he said. "And we will seek out and destroy the networks providing advanced weaponry and training to our enemies in Iraq. (full story) imperialism / international
Atheist Richard Dawkins on 'The God Delusion' posted by Terrence McNally via rialator, 2007-01-24 19:50:05 In the last few years, Americans have seen the dark side of religion. The events of 9/11 brought home the extremes to which some radical Muslims would go to defeat infidels and attain virgins. At home, we've seen assaults on the separation of Church and State and attacks on the teaching of evolution and the distribution of life-saving condoms. And now, it appears the godless are fighting back. (full story) theology / international
Fed Up Soldiers Finding New Ways to Protest the War posted by Jeanine Plant via rialator, 2007-01-22 20:07:57 There is a strict protocol for military dissent. A service member can exercise free speech, for example, but she should be off-duty. She can protest the war, but not in uniform.
In an unprecedented move, 1,171 service members signed the Appeal for Redress -- a three-sentence statement that beseeches Congress to support the prompt withdrawal of troops from Iraq -- amid a flurry of anti-war activity happening around the country and a vigorous public debate about escalation in Iraq. Selective Amnesia posted by Glenn Greenwald via rialator, 2007-01-05 08:13:27 When political leaders make drastic mistakes, accountability is delivered in the form of elections. That occurred in November when voters removed the party principally responsible for the war in Iraq. But the invasion would not have occurred had Americans not been persuaded of its wisdom and necessity, and leading that charge was a stable of pundits and media analysts who glorified President Bush’s policies and disseminated all sorts of false information and baseless assurances. Cakewalk Crowd Abandons Bush posted by Patrick J. Buchanan via fleet, 2007-01-04 09:13:04 Victory has a thousand fathers, but defeat is an orphan, said a rueful John F. Kennedy after the Bay of Pigs. George W. Bush knows today whereof his predecessor spoke. (full story and 1 comments) peace/war / international
Lies have Consequences posted by Ray McGovern and W. Patrick Lang via rialator, 2007-01-03 08:50:50 "This war was launched without an immediate threat to our families... Radical "know-it-all" ideologues here in Washington bent facts, distorted intelligence and perpetrated lies designed to mislead the American people into believing a third-rate thug had a hand in the 9/11 tragedy and was soon to unleash a mushroom cloud."
All those who helped President George W. Bush launch a war of aggression—termed by Nuremberg “the supreme international crime”—have blood on their hands and must be held accountable. This includes corrupt intelligence officials. Otherwise, look for them to perform the same service in facilitating war on Iran. (full story) injustice/law / international

Apocalypto: The Cinematic Logic of Genocide posted by Juan Santos via rialator, 2006-12-18 08:39:22 Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto is not a mere adventure tale, it’s not just another excruciatingly brutal portrayal of apocalyptic violence for its own sake, and the Village Voice is dead wrong when it says that unlike Braveheart and The Passion of the Christ, Apocalypto is “unburdened by nationalist or religious piety,” — that it's “pure, amoral sensationalism.” (full story) social equality/unity / international
The Emerald Tablet of Hermes posted by clavicle, 2006-12-17 20:28:08 History of the Tablet (largely summarised from Needham 1980, Holmyard 1957) The Tablet probably first appeared in the West in editions of the psuedo-Aristotlean Secretum Secretorum which was actually a translation of the Kitab Sirr al-Asar, a book of advice to kings which was translated into latin by Johannes Hispalensis c. 1140 and by Philip of Tripoli c.1243.
