Remember the ‘new sweeping terrorist laws’ the previous conservative Howard government instituted? New draconian laws the current (useless) Rudd government is happy to leave in place. The conservatives felt obliged to emulate America and introduce police state laws though the nation had not suffered any direct terrorist attacks. Civil liberties groups and other concerned citizens protested vehemently regarding intrusions on personal liberties, privacy, and the new draconian/intrusive powers accorded law enforcement agencies, which could easily be abused! Senator Natasha Stott Despoja has served in the Australian Senate for many years and has always been a voice for the underdog and a vigorous supporter of many unpopular but nevertheless important causes. She will soon be retiring from the Parliament to pursue her role as mother and whatever else takes her fancy.
We wish her all the best and thank her for the many years of selfless work and support she has given to the Australian community. We are especially grateful for her support for the many 'unpopular' issues, like lobbying for the release of David Hicks etc. She has assisted many people and has been a tireless proponent of many causes that mainstream politicians view as career 'impediments.'
She is a woman of integrity and gracious disposition, characteristics rare in Australian parliamentarians. We are extremely sorry to see her go but understand her need for change; she has earned our respect and the respect of the Australian community. We sincerely hope that someone is able to fill the space she leaves in the Australian Senate – we are far from impressed with the current crop of dunderheads and ineffective verbose wafflers!

Is there really a time to kill? A question that has bedevilled pacifists, philosophers, theologians and ALL sentient beings throughout the ages? I would state clearly and emphatically now that all sane humans find killing other human beings the most repugnant act possible! Killing is aberrant behaviour to the extreme and comes at huge cost for the killer, regardless of whether we/society sanction the killing -- soldiers/military, police etc -- or not! Furnished with a cringing government grant of $120,000, archaeologists are undertaking a dig at Glenrowan, the site of Ned Kelly’s last stand against colonial oppressors and the corrupt authorities of the time. They hope to unearth new artefacts and solve some popular folk legends that Kelly's brother escaped the siege. It is encouraging that Australia -- now in the most cowardly phase of its history -- reminds itself that it once possessed a fearless, indomitable, fighting, INDEPENDENT spirit. The poor could, with immense difficulty, bridge the affluence gap and become wealthy. Today everyone but the cliques and privileged insiders are shut out permanently!
