Dragons and other Crises

international / miscellaneous / article

Since the South Asian earthquake and ensuing tsunami the Indonesian Archipelago has continued on its very unstable geological course. Every week geophysicists are treated to more rumblings from the earth’s crust. All things being connected in the geophysical sense, it is highly likely that recent volcanic activity in one area of the ‘ring of fire’ will unleash catastrophic forces on the other side of the world – in areas that have high density city populations. I am referring to the release of thousands of megatons of energy the destructive power of which makes a nuclear blast equivalent to a fireworks display.

If all the ‘kings horses’ had trouble with humpty dumpty (Katrina) what chance a real earth-shaping geophysical event? Some are ready some are not (see link) but to another issue, which tickles the fancy of all potential ‘assassins!’

http://cleaves.zapto.org/news/story-37.html

A recent event involving the US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, and a CODEPINK activist, highlighted a very old but true adage -- anyone can be killed! The activist seized the initiative and confronted Rice face to face. An assassin in such close proximity could easily have put Rice’s ‘lights out’ for good -- note the expression, “for good.” Few would have lamented the departure of one of the 21st century’s mass murderers. But the point had been made – regardless of position anyone can be assassinated! From Archduke Ferdinand, to the more recent Kennedy brothers and Yitzhak Rabin; ‘taking out’ those in leadership roles can create havoc or cure a multitude of problems.

Now consider the new rules of the game set by the USA in Iraq – NO RULES or SUIT YOURSELF as the occasion demands! From the illegal Iraq invasion to the Timor-Leste military intervention, neo-conservative governments are responsible. In both instances precious natural resources were targeted by more powerful avaricious regimes.

Compliant puppet regimes were installed in occupied countries in order to facilitate the plunder and exploitation of valuable resources. Both invaded nations are now subject to ongoing military occupation and ‘development under arms.’ A very familiar scenario but one that grates against the character of all freedom loving people, especially the Australian occupation forces in Timor-Leste – Australia was born of liberated convicts and a struggling underclass.

It therefore becomes imperative that the mass media, with its contingent of servile, sycophantic journalists, makes minimal or biased mention of these sordid military activities. Journalists who wish to report comprehensive detailed stories are quickly relieved of their jobs and find it increasingly difficult to work for other large media concerns – it seems lists of ‘unsuitable’ applicants are shared between mass media organisations.

But to return to the subject of assassination. By engaging in a persistent strategy of assassination, puppets in government would soon realise that doing the bidding of power brokers is a health hazard! Imagine popping the bastards off one after another until nations were rid of lying, criminal filth in the halls of power! Entertaining as such thoughts are they are only flights of fancy, this author happens to be a dedicated PEACE activist.

Nevertheless, it does raise a crucial question for all humanity; are we not challenged to overcome our bestial nature and perhaps obtain a prize beyond all measure? Do not the heroic stories and epic quests of mythology involving the slaying of ‘beasts’ and achieving the prize/final victory inform us of our personal challenge to overcome? Be aware that these epics and heroic stories occur universally and pertain to the human condition. The message is clear, meet the challenge, overcome or die! There is no standing still; it is made plain that we are penalised for avoiding life's challenges.

The enduring heroic message couldn’t be more relevant today. We live in a world of social paralysis and morbidity; criminals are leading entire populations to destruction; we have capitulated to fabricated fears and shameless cowardice.

We must all confront and slay the 'dragon’ – our survival depends on it!

Be still my soul amidst mindless throngs
Be still my soul when the blood of babes
is traded for oil

Be still my soul when rivers dry
Be still my soul when mountains burn
Be still my soul when freedom is surrendered
Be still my soul when nations live for greed

Be still my soul when forests become deserts
Be still my soul when seas swallow continents
Be still my soul when the earth shakes like a reed
Be still my soul when arrows of fire issue from the sun
Be still my soul when fathers rape their daughters
Be still my soul when mothers abuse their sons
Be still my soul when brothers bed sisters as wives
Be still my soul when babies are eaten as food

Be still my soul when my cheekbone presses the shoulder
Be still my soul and guide my line of sight
Be still my soul and rid the earth of leaders and followers.

Be still my soul and watch the world in chaos
