text America's War in Central Asia Craig Murray via quill, Wednesday, Jan 28 2009, 7:24am
Despite being denied proper access to the Law Faculty building, ex-ambassador Craig Murray spoke and answered questions from the entrance for over 45 minutes. He spoke on the US war in Central Asia for control over natural gas pipelines, Lord Taylor of Blackburn and other war profiteers, and anti-Muslim propaganda in the media. Murray explicitly supported several key demands of the occupation as reasonable: that the university withdraw investment from the arms trade; that there be bursaries for Palestinian students; and that the university condemn Israel's recent actions towards Gaza.

text The World Won't Buy Unlimited U.S. Debt Peter Schiff via rialator, Saturday, Jan 24 2009, 8:17pm
Barack Obama has spoken often of sacrifice. And as recently as a week ago, he said that to stave off the deepening recession Americans should be prepared to face "trillion dollar deficits for years to come." But apart from a stirring call for volunteerism in his inaugural address, the only specific sacrifices the president has outlined thus far include lower taxes, millions of federally funded jobs, expanded corporate bailouts, and direct stimulus checks to consumers. Could this be described as sacrificial?

text Why Bailing Out Banks Doesn't Work Shamus Cooke via reed, Thursday, Jan 22 2009, 6:14pm
The New York Times recently posed an excellent question: “Why save banks if they won’t lend?” (January 19, 2009)

Before the first $350 billion “installment” of the bailout, we were told that the money was needed to “unfreeze” the credit markets, meaning that banks would again be willing to lend businesses the money they needed to continue doing business.

Despite hugely popular opposition, the bailout proceeded, and absolutely nothing changed.

Tom Friedman image A Perfect Definition of 'Terrorism' Glenn Greenwald via rialator, Wednesday, Jan 14 2009, 8:07pm
This war on the people of Gaza isn't really about rockets. Nor is it about "restoring Israel's deterrence," as the Israeli press might have you believe. Far more revealing are the words of Moshe Yaalon, then the Israeli Defense Forces chief of staff, in 2002: "The Palestinians must be made to understand in the deepest recesses of their consciousness that they are a defeated people." The first of 20,000 to 30,000 additional U.S. troops are scheduled to arrive in Afghanistan next month to re-win the war George W. Bush neglected to finish in his eagerness to start another one. However, "winning" the military campaign against the Taliban is the lesser half of the story.

text Demand accountability or suffer more Fraud Frank Rich via rialator, Monday, Jan 12 2009, 6:31pm
Three days after the world learned that $50 billion may have disappeared in Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme, The Times led its front page of Dec. 14 with the revelation of another $50 billion rip-off. This time the vanished loot belonged to American taxpayers. That was our collective contribution to the $117 billion spent (as of mid-2008) on Iraq reconstruction — a sinkhole of corruption, cronyism, incompetence and outright theft that epitomized Bush management at home and abroad.

text Israel's Dress Rehearsal for Lebanon Mike Whitney via reed, Thursday, Jan 8 2009, 7:57pm
"The raw logic of Israel’s distorted self-image and racist doctrines is exposed beyond confusion by the now-stark reality: the moonscape rubble of once-lovely Lebanese villages; a million desperate people trying to survive Israeli aerial attacks as they carry children and wheel disabled grandparents down cratered roads; limp bodies of children pulled from the dusty basements of crushed buildings. This is the reality of Israel’s national doctrine, the direct outcome of its racist worldview." Virginia Tilley "The Case for Boycotting Israel" in Counterpunch. (story and 1 comment)

Be wary of deceivers that would keep you ignorant and enslaved image The Crisis of Common Sense: Is It So Difficult To Understand The Financial Crisis? Matthias Chang via rialator, Thursday, Jan 1 2009, 7:21pm
[We all have a thinking, highly evolved BRAIN that loves nothing more than to do its job -- given half a chance it will serve YOU very well indeed.]

Thinking & Common Sense

God gave us a brain to think, to think naturally and in simple terms, not in convoluted ways.

When we think naturally and use common sense to address problems we are able to arrive at simple and effective solutions. However, our education system tortures us mentally and forces us to think in convoluted, unnecessarily complicated ways. Our teachers, economists, politicians and other so-called 'experts' make mountains out of mole-hills, turning simple truths into complex arguments and theories. (story and 1 image)

text Leaders LIE, civilians DIE, and lessons of history are IGNORED Robert Fisk via reed, Monday, Dec 29 2008, 8:02pm
We've got so used to the carnage of the Middle East that we don't care any more – providing we don't offend the Israelis. It's not clear how many of the Gaza dead are civilians, but the response of the Bush administration, not to mention the pusillanimous reaction of Gordon Brown, reaffirm for Arabs what they have known for decades: however they struggle against their antagonists, the West will take Israel's side. As usual, the bloodbath was the fault of the Arabs – who, as we all know, only understand force.
