Alternative Xmas message to “the constant drivel of Pope and Queen”
quill, Thursday, Dec 25 2008, 10:39pm
Britain’s Channel 4 has broadcast a bold and controversial Christmas message from one of the world’s most notorious characters, the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad; however, unlike his American and Israeli counterparts the Iranian President has not yet attained the status of mass murderer! Perhaps Channel 4 is giving the world a lesson in HYPOCRISY! (story and 2 comments and 1 image)

Open letter/email to: Senator Natasha Stott Despoja
Cleaves Editorial Team, Tuesday, May 13 2008, 12:05am
Senator Natasha Stott Despoja has served in the Australian Senate for many years and has always been a voice for the underdog and a vigorous supporter of many unpopular but nevertheless important causes. She will soon be retiring from the Parliament to pursue her role as mother and whatever else takes her fancy.
We wish her all the best and thank her for the many years of selfless work and support she has given to the Australian community. We are especially grateful for her support for the many 'unpopular' issues, like lobbying for the release of David Hicks etc. She has assisted many people and has been a tireless proponent of many causes that mainstream politicians view as career 'impediments.'
She is a woman of integrity and gracious disposition, characteristics rare in Australian parliamentarians. We are extremely sorry to see her go but understand her need for change; she has earned our respect and the respect of the Australian community. We sincerely hope that someone is able to fill the space she leaves in the Australian Senate – we are far from impressed with the current crop of dunderheads and ineffective verbose wafflers!

And the Band Played On ..
peptide, Friday, Jun 22 2007, 2:46pm
The title refers to the band on the ‘Titanic’ playing while the ship sank beneath the icy waters. Metaphor or allegory for the assault on free speech and democracy, judge for yourself but don’t forget to remain passive, servile and fearful in the face of all assaults on hard won freedoms and civil liberties – liberties your fathers died in wars to protect! Bush Challenges Opposition -- A Response!
Cleaves Editorial Team, Saturday, Jan 13 2007, 10:53am
In his daily radio address, George W Bush challenged those who oppose his insane route to oblivion, to ‘put up or shut up’. “To oppose everything while proposing nothing is irresponsible," he said, “offer an alternative”. In view of the fact that U.S. Democrats are unable to effectively deal with the situation, we formally and directly accept this challenge and remind Bush that we are aware that this response will be read by him and his neo-cons; indeed, we have been aware for some time that Bush is a regular reader of this site as indeed is Rice and others. There is no avoiding this response! (story and 2 comments and 1 image)

The Ugly Australian
nano, Saturday, Jun 4 2005, 1:49am
The Australian media has lost itself in a ‘feeding frenzy’ once again. The Corby drug case in Indonesia has struck a resonant chord in the cultural consciousness. Media analysts would recall a previous occasion when the local media lost itself in itself and careered into a back lot of a Disneyland film set. It was the (now infamous) Chamberlain "dingo baby" case, a perfect example of objective reporting! A drone population was whipped into a state of distraction only to later confront the reality of Chamberlain’s innocence. This is the result of the media displacing the ‘story' and becoming the event.

The Gold Bead Game
peptide, Friday, Apr 15 2005, 9:01pm
Judgement was recently passed on a perpetrator of one of the largest corporate fraud/failures in Australian history. Minimum time to be served, approximately two and a half years! When we consider the negative impact this individual had on numerous shareholders, employees and the average ‘Joe’ in the street, one could wonder at the ‘severity’ of a sentence usually reserved for marijuana offences. Perhaps publishing the defendant’s legal costs may have helped a lay public better understand how justice is dispensed in Australia. But that’s another story (which should be written). This story will examine one factor contributing to the demise of a huge financial ‘institution’.
