What is NATO Doing in Afghanistan?
Faheem Hussain via rialator, Saturday, Jun 7 2008, 9:26am
What is NATO doing in Afghanistan? What are the true aims of NATO intervention in the region? These are the questions that I mean to address in this article. To understand what is happening in Afghanistan one has to go back to the attack on Yugoslavia by NATO forces in February 1999.

Demystifying Yoga
cleaves, Saturday, Jun 7 2008, 2:27am
After forty years study and practise of Yoga and other related disciplines I can confidently say I know less today than I did when I ‘started,’ which, nevertheless, is considerably more than most ochre-robed yoga ‘experts’ who advertise in various new-age publications. Israel attack on Iran 'unavoidable'-Olmert deputy
Dan Williams via reed, Thursday, Jun 5 2008, 9:47pm
JERUSALEM, June 6 (Reuters) - An Israeli attack on Iranian nuclear sites looks "unavoidable" given the apparent failure of sanctions to deny Tehran technology with bomb-making potential, one of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's deputies said on Friday.

Goodbye Presidency: Obama caves-in to Jewish lobby
barra, Thursday, Jun 5 2008, 9:26pm
Barack Obama just lost the race for the Presidency. At an address to AIPAC, probably the most powerful UNREPRESENTATIVE lobby in the USA, Obama caved to the wishes of the Zionists by pledging almost unconditional support for Israel and going so far as to state publicly that Jerusalem, claimed by two peoples, would remain the undivided capital of Zionist Israel. Bernanke's Speech: "It's all China's fault!"
Mike Whitney via rialator, Wednesday, Jun 4 2008, 10:58pm
He's at it again. Bernanke, that is. Yesterday the Fed chief delivered a rambling 45 minute speech at the International Monetary Conference in Barcelona, laying out all the reasons why the Federal Reserve is NOT responsible for the present crisis in the financial markets. Here's what he said:

Food Summit Sham
peptide, Wednesday, Jun 4 2008, 7:17am
Always look where they don’t want you to look! Have we all noticed who is grabbing the headlines at the UN food summit? Robert Mugabe may not have supplied ample distraction so invite the Iranian leader, Mahmmoud Ahmadinejad, and guarantee a diversion! Neither leader fails to mouth off given the opportunity. Both men are very high value headline grabbers. Their presence at the food summit, I would suggest, is no accident. (story and 2 comments and 1 image)

‘Kneepads’ Smith, ranting over Mugabe
dingo, Monday, Jun 2 2008, 1:53am
The Australian foreign minister Stephen ‘kneepads’ Smith, is in a ‘tiff’ over Robert Mugabe attending a UN food security summit in Rome to which Smith is also invited -- my God, who will they invite next? Smith, widely perceived as a knee-walking, sycophant and American lackey, may be attempting to assert himself as a man by vocally criticising Mugabe. However, images of Smith cringing to the mocking laughter of Condoleezza Rice at a Washington press conference recently, remain fresh in peoples’ minds; achieving manhood my elude Smith yet again! America's massive military budget is irrational, costly and dangerous
Robert Scheer via reed, Sunday, Jun 1 2008, 10:49am
What should be the most important issue in this election is one that is rarely, if ever, addressed: Why is U.S. military spending at the highest point, in inflation-adjusted dollars, than at any time since the end of World War II? Why, without a sophisticated military opponent in sight, is the United States spending trillions of dollars on the development of high-tech weapons systems that lost their purpose with the collapse of the Soviet Union two decades ago?

The Corporate State and the Subversion of Democracy
Chris Hedges via rialator, Saturday, May 31 2008, 9:07pm
Chris Hedges gave this keynote address on Wednesday, May 28, in Furman University’s Younts Conference Center.
When it was announced in May that President Bush would deliver the commencement address, 222 students and faculty signed and posted on the school’s Web site a statement titled “We Object.” The statement cites the war in Iraq and the administration’s “obstructing progress on reducing greenhouse gases while favoring billions in tax breaks and subsidies to oil companies that are earning record profits.”
“We are ashamed of the actions of this administration. The war in Iraq has cost the lives of over 4,000 brave and honorable U.S. military personnel,” the statement read. “Because we love this country and the ideals it stands for, we accept our civic responsibility to speak out against these actions that violate American values.”

American pariah forced to buy 'allies'
Subodh Varma via rialator, Saturday, May 31 2008, 8:28pm
NEW DELHI: The tale of massive fraud and embezzlement of millions of dollars by the US military in its operations in Iraq continues. Testifying before the US Congress Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on 22 May, Mary Ugone, deputy inspector general of accounts in the Pentagon said that an audit of $8.2 billion spending related to the Iraq war showed that $7.8 billion had been improperly spent. The ‘Art’ of Distraction
barra, Friday, May 30 2008, 10:33pm
There is something not quite right about the current hysteria surrounding the work of internationally acclaimed Australian artist, Bill Henson. The speed at which police became involved in Henson’s latest exhibition and the dense, but leading comments made by high ranking politicians regarding some of the works may indicate that ‘things are not what they appear to be!’ (story and 2 comments and 1 image)

European Union runs into roadblocks in its plans for Kosovo
Economist via reed, Friday, May 30 2008, 9:07am
WHEN the Austro-Hungarian empire declared war on Serbia in July 1914, few could have imagined that the result would be the demise not only of the Habsburg empire, but also of the Russian and Ottoman ones. Nobody believes that Serbia's challenge to the European Union over Kosovo will be anything like as dramatic; most Serbs want to join the EU, not destroy it. Yet 100 days after Kosovo declared independence, Serbia has done a lot better than anybody expected in thwarting the EU's plans for it.

Spring Offensive
gan, Thursday, May 29 2008, 10:00am
In an unexpected strategic twist – opinion favoured an offensive during an attack on Iran -- local forces and militias throughout the Middle East and Central Asia are mobilising for a simultaneous and concerted offensive against the American invader/occupier! A coordinated, simultaneous offensive of this type would smash the hold America has on a number of nations in the region. America simply does not have the human resources to respond to such a coordinated offensive. Nor would America’s few allies be willing to fight illegal wars of occupation on America’s behalf! Bush exposed yet again and again and again …
Kingfisher, Wednesday, May 28 2008, 10:28pm
I have lost count of the (too) numerous times Bush and senior members of his criminal government have been exposed for gross deceptions and criminal pursuits. If a HOLOCAUST in progress and an ECONOMIC MELT-DOWN AT HOME doesn’t rouse the people what would former press secretary, Scott McClellan, hope to achieve with his revelations? Less than a week prior to McClellan’s revelations, news of the loss/misappropriation of $15 BILLION in Iraq roused only a few yawns from the American population -- 'good luck' with book sales, Scott! Artist alert in the wake of attacks by conservative despots
quill, Tuesday, May 27 2008, 11:34pm
Conservatives, anal regulators, perverts and politicians fail to realise that Artists are responsible for ALL media output whether it’s fine art, television/film production, journalism, advertising etc etc; an attack on one Australian artist is an attack on ALL Artists! In view of the combined creative power that Artists possess it is a brave or very foolish ‘show pony’ that would offend the Arts and/or Artists.

Australia, for all the wrong reasons

Located in the South Pacific under the rest of the world probably accounts for the difficulty Aussies have adjusting to diverse, cosmopolitan populations. (story and 1 image)

The Unified Majority of Nations

Russia and China have broadened their existing military alliance to include greater economic cooperation and support. Together with the developing nations of Africa, the Pacific, Latin America and Asia the new ‘Eastern’ alliance will form the most powerful economic bloc the world has ever known – that is progressive thinking and is worth contrasting to the violent contractionist approach of America and its allies.

The simple and obvious solution
nano, Saturday, May 24 2008, 11:09pm
Zoologists marvel over how ‘dumb’ animals display foreknowledge of impending natural disasters; the tsunami in SE Asia and now the China earthquake -- giant pandas were seen ‘parading’ in unison (highly unusual behaviour) hours before the quake struck. Yet humans, who were once also able to detect similar and more information from their immediate physical and psychological environment, today seem unable to detect a solution when it stares them in the face!

South America creates regional union, parliament, despite divisions
Marco Sibaja via reed, Saturday, May 24 2008, 12:16am
BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) - A new South American union was born Friday as leaders of the region's 12 nations set out to create a continental parliament. Some see the new organization, Unasur, as a regional version of the European Union. Summit host Brazil wants it to help coordinate defense affairs across South America and Venezuela's Hugo Chavez calls it a counterweight to the United States.
