What is Old is New
apollonius, Saturday, Mar 24 2007, 11:51am
Perhaps a brief interlude is warranted on this site. A few whispers from the past follow:
"And as all things have been arose from one by ye mediation of one: so all things have their birth from this one thing by adaptation."

The Failure of Modern Western Society
finn, Friday, Mar 23 2007, 2:12pm
Wind down from your artificially induced stress/pace and confront your personal reality – take stock for a moment. Your existence has been confined to sustaining and maintaining a system that makes ever-increasing demands on your liberty and freedom – the pillars upon which joy and satisfaction are built/derived! The frenzied pace of western society is largely the result of the manic need for ever increasing profits and greater concentrations of wealth in the fewest possible hands, which inevitably places higher demands on those at the bottom of the financial scale. Obtaining wealth is simply a matter of applying unfair downward pressure in favour of upward flowing benefits; wealth is not created it is the result of manipulation and/or theft – the historical record bears this out. Put simply, profit is exploitation/theft!

Bolton admits Lebanon truce block
BBC via rialator, Thursday, Mar 22 2007, 10:03pm
A former top American diplomat says the US deliberately resisted calls for a immediate ceasefire during the conflict in Lebanon in the summer of 2006. Former ambassador to the UN John Bolton told the BBC that before any ceasefire Washington wanted Israel to eliminate Hezbollah's military capability. (story and 1 comment and 1 image)

New World Order
peptide, Wednesday, Mar 21 2007, 10:22am
A recent article brought home the shocking truth of today’s new world order by contrasting the social outrage expressed against Richard Nixon for his minor offence of a break and enter (Watergate) with today's social complacency in the face of half-a-million civilian dead in Iraq. The office of president of the USA has become an experimental position where corporate placed buffoons are allowed to reign ruin on the world. The “bouquet of flowers, mission accomplished, WMD, give war a chance”, administration got it wrong from the start yet ‘bouquet’ Wolfowitz has been promoted to president of the World Bank, where he continues to bungle and lose to other interests (China). The incompetent clown, Bush, remains president and the criminals who benefit remain behind the scenes profiting on the misery of others! (story and 2 images)

Israel, U.S. hold large-scale joint missile defense exercise
IHT via rialator, Sunday, Mar 18 2007, 9:58am
Prepare for a major ‘incident’ from desperate conservative forces worldwide! The following article would be a routine report if not for U.S. war games and joint military exercises to be held in Australia in the next few weeks. The recent visit of deputy sheriff, John Howard, to Japan on behalf of his master, the USA, provides for Japan to take an active role in military affairs in the region. Howard signed a joint military assistance pact with Japan, which maintains a constitutional anti-war restriction on its military (at the moment).
Joint military exercises in strategic locations around the globe should alarm China, Russia and other nations. The Americans have no notion of subtlety so these exercises indicate more than just routine events. The rogue must be stopped!

The Fragility of Power
peptide, Wednesday, Mar 14 2007, 1:34pm
Surely a little nudge does not warrant such an over-reaction from the panic-stricken U.S. administration. One of the last ‘cards’ in the neo-con deck has been played, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, conveniently held in reserve for future political emergencies, has confessed to everything from 9/11, to stealing my son’s push bike. Panic reigns in conservative park! Whatever happened to Bin Laden? The extreme measure of producing a victim of classic torture/brainwashing in a futile attempt to save the day for conservatives around the world, from Bush to the Howard government of Australia, is bound to fail. Independent experts in various fields could easily determine whether or not the subject is in a fit psychological state and whether any confessions should be taken seriously. Nevertheless, conservative leaders everywhere were quick to try and capitalise on this exceedingly transparent event. (story and 2 comments and 2 images)

The Elite Revolution
twin, Monday, Mar 12 2007, 10:58am
If a single quote could sum up the ‘ability and acumen’ of the Bush administration Rumsfeld’s classic of, “the past was not predictable when it started”, would have to be a front runner. Years from now students will read early 21st century American history with incredulity and dismay. Who could blame any high school student for thinking that historians got it wrong? How could a person with the logic of a mad hatter rise to the position of Defence Secretary in the world’s most powerful military nation; and how could the President of the day consider that person a valuable asset/adviser? Bush, ‘political cadaver’ -- It’s all but (over)
nano, Saturday, Mar 10 2007, 9:29am
There is something politically odd about Bush’s tour of various Latin American countries. South American nations were ‘lost’ to the U.S. some time ago – the price paid for America’s fixation on the Middle East. Bush is loathed internationally but is particularly despised in Latin America. The Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez accurately called Bush a “political cadaver” and led 20,000 Argentinian supporters in the chant, “gringo go home”, during his counter-tour of the region. Global Realignment and the Decline of the Superpower
Mike Whitney via rialator, Friday, Mar 9 2007, 7:00am
The United States has been defeated in Iraq. That doesn’t mean that there’ll be a troop withdrawal anytime soon, but it does mean that there’s no chance of achieving the mission’s political objectives. Iraq will not be a democracy, reconstruction will be minimal, and the security situation will continue to deteriorate into the foreseeable future. (story and 1 image)

Gung-ho Politics
dingo, Thursday, Mar 8 2007, 9:40am
Are we able to remain in denial or is reality about to rub our noses in the horrid mess WE have created since allowing Bush, Blair and Howard to lie to the world and commit their respective populations to an illegal, pre-emptive war, or have we overlooked the real prize, the golden opportunity? The age of mass murder with impunity has dawned, what harm our minor exploits in comparison? The ‘new’ (neo) values of conservatism are undeniably the self-serving impulses of a violent pig at a trough. After centuries of social development and evolution the world stands witness to the re-introduction of barbarism. America and its coalition of willing criminals have returned the world to the ethics of a Swine – gung fuckin’ ho! Gimme, gimme, gimme, me, me, me and screw you – brother's keeper, you must be joking! (story and 1 comment and 2 images)

China Rejects US Human Rights Criticism
Daniel Schearf via rialator, Thursday, Mar 8 2007, 6:48am
China has rejected U.S. criticism of its human rights record, accusing Washington of hypocrisy for not addressing its own abuses. In a tit-for-tat response to the U.S. State Department's annual human rights report, China issued its own report accusing Washington of systematic abuses both abroad - in Iraq and Afghanistan - and at home. Daniel Schearf reports from Beijing. (story and 2 comments)

Timor-Leste: Bungle in the Jungle
barra, Sunday, Mar 4 2007, 9:22pm
Prior to the leadership of John Howard and his defence minister, Brendan (studs) Nelson, the Australian Defence Force always did Australia proud. The reputation of the ADF preceded them in any theatre of war. Aussie soldiers were once considered highly specialised and skilled fighters, so it is with a heavy heart and bitter disappointment that I report the raid on Alfredo Reinado’s hideout FAILED to accomplish its objective. The raid, however, resulted in the needless deaths of four Timorese and a ‘rebel leader’ who easily escaped to the mountains. No one is actually sure Reinado was even present at the time of the attack! Another (Fiji) miserable failure under the watch of Howard and 'studs' Nelson. [Cowards and compensatory personalities should only be permitted to lead girl guides on brownie day!] (story and 3 comments and 1 image)

Oklahoma bombing conspirator claim
Pamela Manson via rialator, Thursday, Mar 1 2007, 8:07am
Much is being made of laws instituted after the Oklahoma bombing and the Hicks prosecution. The American prosecutors of David Hicks and the Australian Attorney General, Philip Ruddock, have made reference to these laws in relation to the Hicks case.
The following article from The Salt Lake Tribune today throws new light on the original bombing. At the very least these claims need to be fully investigated, as the resulting additions to American Law are now instrumental in the prosecution of the Australian citizen, David Hicks. American Torture on Trial
Naomi Klein via rialator, Monday, Feb 26 2007, 9:07pm
February 26, 2007 -- Something remarkable is going on in a Miami courtroom. The cruel methods US interrogators have used since September 11 to "break" prisoners are finally being put on trial. This was not supposed to happen. The Bush Administration's plan was to put José Padilla on trial for allegedly being part of a network linked to international terrorists. But Padilla's lawyers are arguing that he is not fit to stand trial because he has been driven insane by the government. (story and 2 images)

The US, the world's hedge fund
Max Fraad Wolff via rialator, Monday, Feb 26 2007, 11:00am
There are some strange facts about the asset and trade positions of the US economy in the globalizing economy. The United States runs massive and growing trade deficits, is borrowing at a clip that would arouse the suspicions of a casino pit boss, and has been selling its assets to anyone who will buy. In the past 24 months, the US balance on goods and services comes in just shy of negative-$1.5 trillion. Across the same period, the US has sunk further into debt to the rest of the world.

US funds terror groups to sow chaos in Iran
William Lowther and Colin Freeman via rialator, Sunday, Feb 25 2007, 8:19pm
America is secretly funding militant ethnic separatist groups in Iran in an attempt to pile pressure on the Islamic regime to give up its nuclear programme.
In a move that reflects Washington's growing concern with the failure of diplomatic initiatives, CIA officials are understood to be helping opposition militias among the numerous ethnic minority groups clustered in Iran's border regions.
