The prospect of Iran developing a nuclear capability (which would realistically entail at least a five-year time frame) did not prevent John Bolton, US representative to the UN, stating that a “painful” response would be inflicted on Iran if it failed to comply with UN (American) dictates! Questions of the UN’s independence aside, is the focus on Iran a distraction from the debacle that is Iraq or is the USA following their PNAC strategy with little regard for consequences? Bush and his ultra-right honchos are really pissed this time – in their efforts to track down a US loyalist, who spilt the beans on domestic spying, the Bush gestapo are now targeting journos and the free press. All the ‘security’ agencies at this megalomaniac’s disposal have been commandeered for the task. This attack on the free press is yet another devastating blow directed at the already battered body of American democracy and liberty. America, the home of the brave and the land of the free, has been relegated to the historical record. This new land is an abominable aberration of the original.

Bush Go Home

On his triumphalist tour of this part of the world, where he hopes to wave imperiously at people he considers potential subjects, President Bush's itinerary is getting curiouser and curiouser. For his March 2 pit stop in New Delhi, the Indian government tried very hard to have him address our Parliament. A not inconsequential number of MPs threatened to heckle him, so Plan One was hastily shelved. Plan Two was that he address the masses from the ramparts of the magnificent Red Fort where the Indian prime minister traditionally delivers his Independence Day address. But the Red Fort, surrounded as it is by the predominantly Muslim population of Old Delhi, was considered a security nightmare. So now we're into Plan Three: President George Bush speaks from Purana Qila, the Old Fort. (story and 1 comment and 1 image)

Arab fighters and insurgents have demonstrated to the world that the US is a ‘superpower’ in name only. A poorly armed and trained but highly motivated and dedicated band of fighters has exposed the US military as weak, inept, unskilled, brutal and bereft. From South America to the Himalayas, resistance against capitalist plunder and exploitation signals the inevitable failure of militaristic capitalism. Regardless of all other considerations people today have confirmed that they will fight any aggressor who threatens their homes, families and way of life.

Faced with the undeniable and now unavoidable truth of the criminality of the Bush, Blair and Howard governments, what do you suppose are the consequences for these men? People are fined for parking and littering offences but murder and plunder on an international level incurs no penalty it would seem. [The ICC is a puppet court, an institution with zero credibility.] Is the lack of legal and public response surprising? Advice from leading consultants and ‘people managers’ was/is unanimous; once a decision is acted upon by a government and a nation is committed to a particular course, the people are swept along regardless of compromising evidence released during or after the event. US Secretary of Defence, Donald Rumsfeld, recently announced the ‘war on terror’ would be re-named “the long war”; this announcement has not surprised analysts who are aware that neo-con ideologues and strategists follow the Straussian (and perverted Trotskyist) doctrine of permanent war. Some interpret this as nostalgia for the ‘good old days’ of the Cold War in which a clearly defined enemy (communist bogeymen) kept the nation on permanent alert and amenable to the powers of the time. The forces that divide humanity issue from religion, tribalism, racism and self-interest. The fact that right wing groups emphasise the ‘virtues’ of these principles clearly identifies their support base and driving principles. It would seem obvious that an assault on the principles that create undesirable circumstances is preferable to dealing with the (disastrous) consequences after the event.

Bush confesses his criminality and hopes that his ‘act’ of contrition will save him from the dock. He has finally acknowledged that the invasion (and occupation) of Iraq was/is based on incorrect information (lies). Supporters and citizens who desperately hope that Bush’s admission demonstrates his contrition had their hopes dashed against the hard reality of further sordid deeds – the illegal 'bugging' and monitoring of US citizen’s private communications by the NSA. [Would anyone seriously expect this criminal administration to change character?] Bush’s admission is a political gesture, a strategic manoeuvre in response to increasing international disapproval of the dishonesty of his regime.

A fundamental feature of extremist regimes is the absolute requirement for an adversary. If a real or perceived enemy loses its opponent status then a bogeyman (under the bed) mentality is cultivated until the negative effects of that strategy (fear, loathing etc.) can be successfully superimposed onto a suitable ‘candidate’. The ‘successful’ candidate would then immediately attract the fear, loathing and violence of the extremist society (or group) in question. (story and 2 images)
