Greenspan admits Iraq was about oil, as deaths put at 1.2m
Peter Beaumont and Joanna Walters via rialator, Saturday, Sep 15 2007, 9:54pm
The man once regarded as the world's most powerful banker has bluntly declared that the Iraq war was 'largely' about oil. Appointed by Ronald Reagan in 1987 and retired last year after serving four presidents, Alan Greenspan has been the leading Republican economist for a generation and his utterings instantly moved world markets. The New Evil Empire: Google displaces Microsoft
Kismo, Friday, Sep 14 2007, 1:55pm
In today’s digital world of networking and information access, corporate interests that are able to control and manage the flow of information place themselves in immensely powerful positions – far more powerful than any State, government or traditional Corporation. Since its introduction – only two decades ago – the Internet has become an indispensable feature of our lives. In fact, if the plug was pulled on the net the world as we know it would come to a standstill, such is the importance of the flow of information today. (story and 3 comments and 1 image)

The dickhead and his whore have landed
finch, Monday, Sep 3 2007, 11:53pm
One look at the opulence and extravagance of Bush and his war whore companion Condoleezza Rice arriving in Sydney in a fleet of 747s while the NZ Prime Minister and other APEC leaders arrive by commercial airliners removes all doubts regarding whether or not two hundred million (plus) of taxpayer’s dollars has been well spent. One is sickened by Bush’s extravagance and waste, not to mention the carbon footprint of the world's biggest waste maker and polluter! (story and 1 comment and 1 image)

The Next Quagmire
Chris Hedges via rialator, Sunday, Sep 2 2007, 10:18pm
The most effective diplomats, like the most effective intelligence officers and foreign correspondents, possess empathy. They have the intellectual, cultural and linguistic literacy to get inside the heads of those they must analyze or cover. They know the vast array of historical, religious, economic and cultural antecedents that go into making up decisions and reactions. And because of this—endowed with the ability to communicate and more able to find ways of resolving conflicts through diplomacy—they are less prone to blunders. (story and 1 image)

Kosovo ‘elections’: unsubtle Attack on Serbian Sovereignty
dusan, Friday, Aug 31 2007, 2:10pm
The military elephant of the world and its allies seem unsatisfied with fragmenting Yugoslavia into numerous ineffective, weak, dependent sub-nations; now they wish to fragment the fragments. How many times over centuries of Balkan history have the Serbian people endured victimisation, oppression, genocidal slaughter from powerful, invading or meddling nations and how many times have the Serbian people prevailed over their enemies? The Life and Times of the 'Agency'
Chalmers Johnson via reed, Wednesday, Jul 25 2007, 6:43pm
The American people may not know it but they have some severe problems with one of their official governmental entities, the Central Intelligence Agency. Because of the almost total secrecy surrounding its activities and the lack of cost accounting on how it spends the money covertly appropriated for it within the defense budget, it is impossible for citizens to know what the CIA's approximately 17,000 employees do with, or for, their share of the yearly $44 billion-$48 billion or more spent on "intelligence." This inability to account for anything at the CIA is, however, only one problem with the Agency and hardly the most serious one either.

U.S. led Destruction of Yugoslavia Continues
rade, Monday, Jul 23 2007, 12:54pm
Following NATO’s support of KLA terrorist separatists and Bush’s promise to support secessionist moves by Albanians living in the Serbian province of Kosovo, Condoleezza ‘war whore’ Rice, today “assured” leading separatists the U.S. is “committed” to Kosovo's independence “within months” regardless of UN Security Council decisions! Isn’t that just typical? We are all reminded of America ignoring accurate UN reports that WMD did NOT exist in pre-invasion Iraq but America, in usual rustic fashion, invaded anyway and created the world’s worst humanitarian tragedy since WWII -- innocent civilian casualties are fast approaching one million! The ‘Lone Wolf’ terrorist and a ‘Little Red’ faced absurdity
dingo, Wednesday, Jul 11 2007, 2:09am
There comes a time when beat-ups, orchestrated lies, fabrications and plain incompetence converge to form the most ludicrous proposition imaginable. We recall the Saddam connection to Bin Laden, fantasy WMD, mobile anthrax labs, bouquets of flowers and open armed welcomes for invaders, breaking the back of the insurgency, mission accomplished, the inane poetry of Rumsfeld and various other mutterings from the loony tunes brigade OF CRIMINAL MASS MURDERERS. However, it seems the best is yet to come; the local chapter of the lobotomy squad, masquerading as an anti-terrorist force in Sydney has invented a new category of terrorist – the “lone wolf.” (story and 1 image)

U.S. and NATO forces kill more civilians than Taliban
Laura King via rialator, Friday, Jul 6 2007, 2:23pm
KABUL, AFGHANISTAN — After more than five years of increasingly intense warfare, the conflict in Afghanistan reached a grim milestone in the first half of this year: U.S. troops and their NATO allies killed more civilians than insurgents did, according to several independent tallies. The upsurge in deaths at the hands of Western forces has been driven by Taliban tactics as well as by actions of the American military and its allies. (story and 2 images)

WASHINGTON, Jun 24 (IPS) - As the George W. Bush administration struggles through its last two years in office, it appears that the agenda of neoconservative ideologues has finally lost its appeal among strategic parts of the U.S. foreign policy apparatus.

The CIA and Fatah
Mike Whitney via rialator, Thursday, Jun 21 2007, 10:20am
"When Hamas gunmen stormed the Fatah security compounds in Gaza last week they found huge supplies of American-made weaponry including 7,400 M-16 assault rifles, dozens of mounted machine guns, rocket launchers, 7 armored military jeeps, 800,000 rounds of bullets and 18 US-made armored personnel carriers. They also discovered something far more valuable--- CIA files which purportedly contain "information about the collaboration between Fatah and the Israeli and American security organizations; CIA methods on how to prevent attacks, chase and follow after cells of Hamas and the Committees; plans about Fatah assassinations of members of Hamas and other organizations; and American studies on the security situation in Gaza." Unravelling
gan, Monday, Jun 18 2007, 10:19pm
As the wall approaches, or rather as we speed recklessly toward it, it serves no purpose to analyse how a nation, trillions of dollars in debt, remains in a position to offer billions to its enemies and try and buy its way out of inevitable collapse. The buy-off strategy is not new, what is new however is that the offers have been rejected – no amount of money could buy Kosovo from Serbia, what are a people without a heart or national identity? Condi Rice, with Israel’s whole-hearted support, today openly offered to buy-off Palestinians in the vain hope that western influence could be maintained in the region. For numerous reasons this strategy will also fail. (story and 1 comment and 1 image)

Bush pre-empts Al-Sadr’s Return
barra, Friday, May 25 2007, 11:56am
Shia leader Muqtada al-Sadr re-appears just two days after Bush’s statement to the American media that next month (we assume June) will be a critical period in the ongoing travesty that is the Iraq occupation. Bush may have finally received some accurate information regarding al-Sadr’s plans to unite with Sunni leaders and hopefully form a unified and powerful front against invading and occupying forces. Al-Qaeda’s Waiting Game
Michael Scheuer via rialator, Sunday, May 20 2007, 8:36pm
Americans tend to forget that while we were surprised by the 9/11 attacks, al-Qaeda was not. The attacks’ exact date was known to bin Laden and two or three others only six days before Sept. 11, 2001, but they had long known the attacks were coming. Thus al-Qaeda was able to move important operatives, archives, material, and other assets out of Afghanistan in advance. (story and 1 comment)

The uninformed are rejoicing over the forced resignation of Paul (bouquet of flowers) Wolfowitz from the World (US) Bank; the resignation of Tony (45 minutes) Blair as British prime minister; the foregone demise of George (WMD, mission accomplished) Bush and the likely elimination of John (aluminium tubing) Howard as Australian prime minister.
