Over twenty years ago (take note Al) an Australian commercial channel aired a program on the impending destructive effects of pollution on the climate and the environment. It was a measured, rational, non-sensationalist but heavily supported with scientific data presentation. It detailed the effects of global warming on major ocean currents and the dire consequences for North-Western Europe; it highlighted the potential wholesale destruction of sensitive coral reefs and the maritime ecology. It referred to biological indicators, stressed amphibians, frogs and the disturbed migration pattern of birds. All evident at the time – 20 years ago! But the most alarming indicator was accelerated glacial melting/receding -- high mountain glaciers feed the world’s largest food producing river systems! (story and 2 comments and 2 images)

Former PM John Howard’s greatest achievement has been largely overlooked, as it was a secondary by-product of his conservative politics of fear and servility. Inadvertently or otherwise Howard succeeded in reshaping the opposition Labor party and creating a Labor leader in his own image! That development has been most unfortunate for Australia, as Howard’s most notable characteristic while in office was COWARDICE! Australia is not short of critical issues affecting the nation at present. Perhaps the most politically damaging -- but by no means the most important – are bank interest rate hikes and the lack of regulation in this regard! The parasitic Banks are attempting – successfully at this stage -- to pass the cost of THEIR INCOMPETENCE to the public! The feeble and outrageous excuse given to Rudd’s eunuch government and the Australian people is that interest rates have risen in order to compensate for losses sustained from “exposure” to the U.S. credit crisis; in other words, ‘I want YOU to pay for MY incompetence,’ say the banks! ‘Impressive’ manoeuvre! The arrogance of deregulated Australian banks knows no bounds as is clearly evident today; it seems the word RESPONSIBILITY only applies to the public [servicing bank loans] but not to Bank executives – a very nice arrangement, for some! Rupert Murdoch’s show pony, Kevin Rudd, is the focus of foaming praise in the local mass media. One report described Rudd as almost walking on water and appearing taller than his actual diminutive height, another Murdoch rag described him as “shining” – give us a break! But ain’t it a shame Kevin ignored the issue of five murdered Australians; shirking the responsibility of bringing the Balibo murderers to justice is noted -- another 'fearless' leader in the Howard tradition! But our Kevin was made for prancing and the Bali summit afforded the perfect opportunity for Murdoch's new show pony to strut his stuff on the international stage. The title indirectly hints at the fact that this intro is an indictment of the current crop of Oz journalists and a tribute to Carmel Travers – who it seems was the last real Australian journalist willing to pursue the Truth at any cost.
In the wake of a damning report assessing declining press freedoms and disappearing government transparency, Travers’ outstanding professionalism and character shines like a beacon in the dark mire of selective, biased and servile reporting. The last thing any incumbent government wants to hear at election time is incriminating information relating to past failures, unpopular decisions and damaging indiscretions – ‘let’s stay focused on the NOW,’ is the new slogan of the conservatives. Little wonder, as the current PM is responsible for dragging the nation into an illegal war, abandoning citizens to foreign powers, surrendering drug mules to barbaric regimes to face the death penalty, deporting Australian citizens who didn’t have European round eyes and white skin, instigating race riots, allowing corporations to dictate policy, fast tracking approval for the Pluto and Gorgon gas projects and BHP evading water costs that local farmers face daily! We could add surrendering the nation to the yanks and its wealth to the Transnationals while allowing necessary services – education, health/dental, infrastructures, road/rail, housing and energy to fall into disrepair or neglect. The Howard racist government has plainly lost the plot as is clearly evident in the announcements and statements of Immigration Minister, Kevin ‘no Africans here’ Andrews and Howard enforcer, Bill ‘yellow peril’ Heffernan. But the overt racism of these two ideological dinosaurs has not delivered the final deathblow to the Howard antiquated government. That dubious honour goes to Malcolm ‘rice balls’ Turnbull, who has so ‘expertly’ committed personal political suicide (over his handling of the red-hot Gunns, pulp mill issue) the flow-over effect threatens to drag his party under with him!
