Anti-terrorist amendment rushed through Australian Parliament.
John Howard has raised the ‘spectre’ of a 'possible' terrorist strike (?) in order to implement, without proper parliamentary debate, a new law (or semantic alteration) designed to save us all! A ‘raw prawn’ strategy if ever there was one. We referred to terrorist groups and actual bombings in Australia in a recent article:
“We are liable to forget, due to the hype that surrounds the word “terrorism”, that Australia has faced violent political extremists in the recent past. In the sixties and seventies there were numerous bombings in the main streets of Sydney (George St.) by Croatian fanatics who also conducted illegal military training camps in the Australian bush. Standard policing, monitoring techniques and ‘problem isolation’ – without any negative impact on the population – dealt with these extremists very effectively.”

EXISTING LAWS and a non-hysterical public who had confidence in Australian regulatory authorities and the Prime Minister of the day, Gough Whitlam, confronted the above terrorist events with minimal alarm. The situation was decisively, effectively and permanently dealt with – how times have changed, or rather the character of Australian leadership!
The major difference between Howard and Whitlam is Whitlam was no man's lackey dog or a coward by nature. Compare today’s headlines of the prospect of a terrorist strike and the quiet efficiency of past authorities.
Howard is a national disgrace – I would remind the reader that bombings in a main Sydney Street were an actuality (an event/occurrence!) and terrorist groups were armed and engaged in their fanatic pursuits. The situation had been monitored and was dealt with professionally without the need to change existing laws or create concern or hysteria. Compare the antics of today with the quiet professionalism of the past in the face of ACTUAL EVENTS!
Has the dreaded ‘chicken fever’ (no reference to avian flu) already struck the Australian population or is a cunning sewer rat attempting to distract/manipulate the population with fear politics once again?
I do not recall an instance in Australian history where the leadership displayed such pure cowardice and ineptitude as today's excuse for a government AND opposition.
The real issue is not Howard's tired and predictable 'red herring' tactics, it is whether the Australian public regains its senses or succumbs to the contractionism of the John Howard imposition – the integrity of the nation is at stake.
Whitlam cured a real terrorist situation without the need for media hysteria or an ongoing 'debate' on terrorism.
If you suspect that 'terrorist' hysteria is being utilised to veil another (less obvious) agenda you would be correct. Ask yourself whether Australia should slavishly follow the US into pariah status (and become a target as a result) or whether we should consolidate in our own region. Be assured, Australia is fully capable of defending herself in the region; we have had the expertise and technological capability for decades.
Also, the not to be forgotten thorn in Howard's side is the fact that New Zealand is not a terrorist target (for good reason).
God save Oz because the Australian people can no longer save themselves!
